In the former release of K2 I changed the 'featured item" image. With the new version 2.7 the original featured item image is back again. I have replaced the featureditem.png with my own image (filename still featuredItem.png) in components/com_k2/images/system.

The original image (red banner texted "featured" still appears. Also after emptying cache etc. Has something changed in K2? Also see: www.ijssalonhemels.nl/hemels-ijs/hemels-schepijs

Since you are using overrides, it really comes down to the edited image path.
The entire images/system path can be overridden and placed in your template. Make sure that, that image is not being retrieved from your template.
