Why Does K2 Have It's Own ACLs? was created by Timothy Michel
I just finished setting up a complicated set of Joomla User Groups, and after I finished, I noticed that K2 has it's own User Groups for some odd reason. Is there any reason I need to use the K2 User Groups or can I just assign K2 permissions to the Joomla User Groups and call it a night??

Thanks, Tim

Yes you need them because Joomla!'s AC does not cover frontend editing, commenting etc..

In the next version however Joomla!'s ACL will be fully included.

In the next version make sure that you support the ability to set permissions on individual categories. I can't restrict categories to particular users without this feature. I can do it in native Joomla but not in K2.

For now, do I have to recreate the Joomla user groups, which is quite extensive, in K2, to be able to have front end editing available to specific user groups.? And how do I give specific user groups the rights to create and edit content for specific categories????

Joomla ACLs supports front end editing by default. If I need some user group to have back end access I have to specifically set "Access Administration Interface" for that user group. In K2 permissions you have, "Access Administration Interface," as well, which I thought I had to set in order to give a user the ability to access the K2 admin panel which wan't a problem, just one additional permission to set.

Now you are telling me that I have to duplicate the Joomla user groups in K2.

I will tell you that I went through this with the people at JEvents, but turns out that through they have their own ACLs they support native Joomla ACLs as well.

So I am waiting for K2 3.0??? When will that be released?????

Thanks, Tim

I do not have a definite release date yet Timothy.
For the current version, I will have to refer you to the KED or the JED for an extension that enhances K2's ACL.

Sorry, I am not here to tinker around with ACLs that should already be in place. K2 should have used the Joomla ACLs since Joomla 2.5 was released.

I don't know if you noticed, but our worlds are falling apart and I need to focus on the business of organizing people to do something about that rather than spending all my time making duplicate ACLs for Joomla and K2 when it only needs to be done once.

I don't know what is important to Fotis, but I can't wait around for years for him to get around to doing something.

Maybe you guys should make peace with Joomla and work on making Joomla better instead of trying to create your version of Joomla on top of Joomla.

Thanks, Tim
