Is it possible to add a way to assign an image as a thumbnail for an attachment?

If not, is there a plugin that offers this ability?

Hello Geoff,

Unfortunately there is no way by default.
You can however override the item template and include a link (image source) in the attachment's title or description in order to create a thumbnail.
