Is there a mailing list or something where you announce?

Btw: you will need to make it open source, even if there is a paid subscription etc.. K2 is released under the GNU license, and the GNU license clearly states:

Permissions
Commercial use
Modification
Distribution
Private use

Limitations
Liability
Warranty

Conditions
License and copyright notice
State changes
Disclose source
Same license


From the license: 
  3. You may copy and distribute the Program (or a work based on it,
under Section 2) in object code or executable form under the terms of
Sections 1 and 2 above provided that you also do one of the following:

    a) Accompany it with the complete corresponding machine-readable
    source code, which must be distributed under the terms of Sections
    1 and 2 above on a medium customarily used for software interchange; or,

    b) Accompany it with a written offer, valid for at least three
    years, to give any third party, for a charge no more than your
    cost of physically performing source distribution, a complete
    machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code, to be
    distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a medium

    c) Accompany it with the information you received as to the offer

But I am sure you are familiar with the terms and conditions of open source and the GNU/GPL licenses in detail.
any derived works must be released under the same license and include a full source code - but that should not hinder you from making a commercial release of a K2 fork with e.g. service, auto updates, etc.; that is possible for sure and clearly also allowed by the GNU License.
It just needs to be always accompanied by the source code.

We will not be required to do that as Everist is not K2 and is not using any IP of Joomlaworks.

We're building and coding a unique extension with far more capabilities.

It will be released at everist. coliptus. com

Ah, okay - so it will not be actually based on K2 like "porting K2 to J4 + extending it," - but it is a new piece of an extension developed from scratch?
Then I misunderstood that - I thought you were planning on forking K2 or using it as a base or collaborating with JoomlaWorks to build on K2. (hence the thread's topic "K2 and Joomla 4";)

wow! big OOPS - I had no idea this extension had sundowned. The Joomla update source is still "legal', I was just assuming it hadn't needed any updates. Maybe they should turn off the update site !

Doing my last minute checks, on the PHP8 DEV server, I discovered a 500 error when editing existing K2 log in the backend:


PHP Fatal error: Array and string offset access syntax with curly braces is no longer supported in /var/www/html/[redacted]/html/media/k2/assets/vendors/verot/"KLASS_DOT-UPLOAD-DOT-PHP', referer: http://dev.[redacted]/administrator/&view=item&cid=76

It seems to be in a 'verot' subcomponent that hasnt been updated since 2017.
Anyway, thought I would share my simple workaround:

'klass-dot-upload-dot-php' file, change line 2726:
//$last = strtolower($size{strlen($size)-1});
$last = strtolower($size(strlen($size)-1));

If anyone else has found other 'PHP8 bugs" this would probably be a good a thread as any to post them in, no?

PS:  File name obfuscated as this forum is deleting them

Michael, try K2ForJ4 fork on githab, that will solve all the problems.
