I thought I could just enable the core sef urls but when I do my site does not work at all.Can anyone provide the best course of action.

Did you rename the file on the sites' root called htaccess.txt to .htaccess?

I did. It displays the home page correctly once. But when I click any link I get a 404 and then all the template and graphics disappear.

UPDATE...

Ok, silly me. Did not enable the apache mod I think it is ok now.
