Joomla native SEF and removing the 'item'

Joomla native SEF and removing the 'item' was created by Alan Sparkes
Seems to me that the word item that appears in the SEF URL when linking to k2 items is a bit superfluous.
Has anyone removed this with htaccess? I am trying to avoid installing another component like sh404 etc
