I have a large main menu. Mostly all of the menu entries are k2 items or k2 category item lists. The category item lists work as summary pages. And there's a right sidebar and an offcanvas navigation menu which should always show the active menu item of the actually visited page. This works as long as the urls with main menu item id is set as the main url with sh404sef. In most cases not the url with the main menu item id is set as main url by sh404sef but the url generated with category item list view. sh404sef collects the urls as duplicates. As result the navigation menu no longer shows the active menu item of the actually visited page.

Here's an example:

sef url:

www.mathelike2016.mathelike.de/abi-check/1-analysis.html

Two non sef urls which are listed with sh404sef as duplicates:

index.php?option=com_k2&Itemid=148&id=323&lang=de&task=category&view=itemlist
index.php?option=com_k2&Itemid=3697&id=323&lang=de&layout=category&task=category&view=itemlist

When the url index.php?option=com_k2&Itemid=148&id=323&lang=de&task=category&view=itemlist is assigned to be the main url the navigation menu don't shows the active menu item. the items 148 and 323 are k2 category ids of the categories "ABI CHECK" and "1 Analysis".

When the url index.php?option=com_k2&Itemid=3697&id=323&lang=de&layout=category&task=category&view=itemlist is assigned to be the main url the navigation menu works as desired. The id 3697 is the main menu id of the assigned k2 category menu entry "1 Analysis".

Of course I can assign main urls with sh404sef but it's not a stable method. Once urls are purged and everything is gone. I've just asked weeblr support. Should be tricky to find out how these sh404sef duplicates and how they are assigned as main urls to a page. so I would like to ask the k2 community forum about it's experience and advice.

k2 sh404sef plugin is published and gives the correct set urls.

Any idea? I don't know how to begin to localize the problem.

It seems that the category might be published into two menu items.
Ids 148 and 3697.
Look into the menu item with the id 148 to verify this.

The Link of the menu item id 148 is:
index.php?option=com_k2&view=itemlist&layout=category&task=category&id=322

And the Link of the menu item id 3697 is:
index.php?option=com_k2&view=itemlist&layout=category&task=category&id=323

Two different k2 categories, 322 is foe "ABI CHECK" and 323 is for the k2 sub category "1 Analysis".

Are these categories connected in any way? eg: parent/child category?

Yes, the category with the id 323 is a child of the parent category 322

The child category was accessed from the parent category's menu and sh404sef recorded this as a duplicate.

This could have been before the mapping of the child category to a separate menu item.
If that is the case you won't have any other issues.

I don't expect this to be an issue since you are using sef URLs, but check your site to see if there is a hardcoded link that might cause a somewhat insignificant issue.

Yes that's right, I have a lot of those issues like this example.
When you say hardcoded links I assume you meant manually set links. I have set manual links widely and also to this parent category but always with the ice editor by choosing the menu item. How can I determine a manual link to cause an issue?

You assume correctly.
If a manual link points a deprecated URL, then it is possible that the link will be 'scanned' twice.
Setting redirect rules will solve this. Having canonical tags in your site will do the same.
