K2 and Joomla 4

Category: English K2 Community

You are absolutely right. I have tested JSW CRM too, and there is nothing that we can compare to K2. I am using K2 on one of my websites since 2012 and learned many more things. Obviously, K2 is the best CCK and there is no other CCK that defeats K2.

Now I am waiting for an update from JoomlaWorks for K2. I am not in a hurry, because in the meanwhile, we can upgrade the design, and UI of the Joomla 4 template, and whenever K2 will release its Joomla 4 version, we have to only migrate the K2 database. For now, we are happy with Joomla 3 and K2 and can expect new updates soon.

Yeah, I agree @Andrew Hickey,
The request of OSM mention "The awarded applicant will be required to provide Security Support for Joomla 3.10 core, developing patches and releasing security update packages for 18 months from August 2023 onwards."
18 MONTHS !
This is a nightmare for a simple user : I don't know if I have to upgrade or not to J4 + Which version should I use for my new sites ? The problem is coming from Joomla organisation, not K2 or Joomlaworks!
The proof is in the pudding; a lot of CCK has NOT migrated to J4 yet : Seblod (Release Preview) - Fabrikar - K2 - Chronoform... and so on. Some exception of course, but not enough...

Sorry for this guys.

The issue is now resolved. Just re-install K2.

The version is still the same for the record as it's tied to the same day.

A new option will also be added in a few days to switch between full category paths or single category paths (the current default) in both item and category URLs.

Release snapshots are available here: getk2.org/downloads/

Since Oleksander messaged me already and provided his Custom SEF setup, Morten could you please do the same as well? Just grab a screenshot of your Custom SEF settings in K2's component settings and upload it here.

I've actually gone ahead and updated the URL router. Version 2.11.20230323 is now available to upgrade and should resolve any such issues.

I've also enabled advanced SEF URLs on the K2 demo site here: demo.getk2.org/

K2 and Joomla 4

Category: English K2 Community

@Chris
a) K2 works with PHP up to 8.1 on Joomla 3. If you can't upgrade, it's some other extension or your template you need to deal with, that's for sure.

b) Joomla 4 is really, really beta software. It's not just us saying this... Anyone who really knows Joomla, knows this. On the one side it's Joomla's marketing/hype/whatever machine and on the other side it's reality.

And yes there are some in the community that preach you *MUST* update to J4, but dig those folks up: most have either little to no professional coding/development skills and surely insignificant background in large Joomla projects.

I mean, the J team (unfortunately) just utterly got it wrong this time. If they didn't, this www.opensourcematters.org/organisation/requests-for-proposals/322-request-for-proposals-extended-support-for-joomla-3-x.html would not have been posted by OSM (the org. that runs Joomla).

And this will surely bite back Joomla in many forms (e.g. by sending more folks to WordPress).

Joomla DB Compatibility

downloads.joomla.org/technical-requirements mentions Joomla 3.x is compatible with PgSQL v9+. If you're talking about K2, we haven't had any reports of it not working with PgSQL.

So all I can say is, try in a staging environment to make sure all works as expected. If I were you I would upgrade Joomla to the latest 3.x release first.

count(): Argument #1 ($value) must be of type Countable|array, string given

Category: English K2 Community

This comes from your template overrides for K2 most likely (if not some other extension loading there in K2)...

The fix is easy, e.g. something like this: www.joomlaworks.net/forum/k2-en/59481-error-message-after-upgrade-to-php8-0-fpm#178585

K2 Potential Upgrade Issue (Joomla 3.10 to Joomla 4.26)

Category: English K2 Community

I want to upgrade from Joomla 3.10 to Joomla 4.26. However, the pre-update check gives me two errors. It says there is a potential upgrade issue with two K2 plugins:

System - K2
User - K2

How can I rectify this? Please help.

Category: English K2 Community

Hello.

after the last K2 upgrade, the following error appears:
0 count(): Argument #1 ($value) must be of type Countable|array, null given
/home/.../public_html/plugins/system/lscache/components/com_k2 . php:46

The error is only when saving and closing an article written in k2 or when clicking the close button.
When disabling the Litespeed plugin, the error disappears.

Last K2, Jomla 3, Litespeed plugin

What can be done?

This error comes from a K2 override or other Joomla module or plugin.

Open the Joomla debugger and switch error reporting to maximum to identify the exact origin of the error.

K2 and Joomla 4

Category: English K2 Community

@Gee
The joy in developing K2 was never lost :)

And of course it's natural that Joomla evolves, but they way it's done every freaking time has become annoying when life gets in the way (inevitably). As we grow older, we prioritise differently. Practical is better that shiny/new.

Joomla 4 brings nothing new to the table for end-users. As did Joomla 3 over 2.5. The only major feature for end-users came after Joomla 1.5 with the advent of custom user groups/ACL. That was it and still is. (And as for PHP compatibility? Joomla 3 & K2 work *just fine* in PHP 8.1. See the updated not on the initial post in this thread...)

Joomla is a platform like an OS. And like any serious OS it should limit its features to core & improve on them. As a good example in open source, see how Linux OSs evolve over time and how the top GUIs like KDE & Gnome limit their offered software to core/essential or small helpful utilities. If any of these attempted to create a LibreOffice or GIMP or Blender clone though, would be instantly mocked at by the community...

But no, the usual Joomla devs/fanboys/co-founders that control the project, who actually ousted any other reasonable people in the project or community over time (because the latter obviously had more important things to deal with in life), think Joomla has a holly mission of providing everything for 99,9% of sites without any 3rd party extensions, while following every moronic programming pattern or trend they can so as not to be called old or obsolete in programming. Joomla *used* to be at the forefront of CMS software. Now it's just copying what others are doing and it's also doing so in bad way. They mock WordPress which controls half the goddamn internet (because it's practical & backwards compatible), yet don't grasp why Joomla's percentage is dropping or why end-users don't get their genius.

This is a) sort-sighted (no understanding of the original software's success = it's community of 3rd party devs) b) reveals character complex (personal egos and such) and c) it's just plain stupid from a business standpoint. These people usually have no real-world/professional experience and I'm not talking about selling extensions as a professional endeavour, I mean actually using Joomla to deliver projects (sites or web apps) for paying customers/businesses.

You know what end-users and businesses say for J4? It's actually sh*t. And they have no damn reason to change to it, especially when the core software they utilize (which 100% covers their content needs) is up to date, modern looking, fast loading and continuously upgraded with meaningful features.

Everything else is hypothetical developer joy. It usually takes all the hardcore-OOP/new/shiny/whatever fans in Joomla a couple of years to realize after each major b/c-breaking release, but when they do, they have already "shot their feet". And the circle continues by breaking the b/c one more freaking time with the next "big release".

Which is why K2 will gradually switch to the simplest humanly possible MVC structure ever, without sacrificing its extensible nature or features. And yes, you might see K2 in WordPress at some point in the near future...
