I had the same issue and same error, after spending 1hour, i find out that I made an error when zipping the files, my mistake is the following:

1- created a folder named myimage and then I zip the folder and upload on k2 image gallery

the fix was to select/highlight all photos together and zip them, this way you will not have a sub directories created.

hope this help someone with the same problem.

I had the same problem on a new install and this method worked for me. Give it a go before mucking arund with permisssions. etc.

This error is because you upload the images .zip in K2 before configuring the plugin
Root folder for image galleries -> media/k2/galleries
If you do not do this before you will have error
To correct go to the image folder on the server: root/media/k2/galleries -> delete image folder you uploaded
Then go to the item you have upload image on k2, click on Image gallery tab, click in check-box for delete and click apply or save
Now upload zip image forder and save. That is it.

@tonicosta,
not always. This may be the solution in some cases.

I thought I'd post what helped me. Great product by the way!

So it turns out that SIG does not like files of the same name that differ with underscores and hyphens. Turns out I had two files with a similar name:

image-name.jpg
and
image_name.jpg

Turns out SIG can't distinguish between "-" and "_" when it renames each picture to a cached image. So all I had to do is rename the file and refrain from using underscores. Might want to fix that.

Yep, thanks ami2510!

This happened when I migrated my site to a new server.

Upoading all of the images at once caused the error but when I uploaded files with similar names separately, and reloading the page between each one, it worked fine.
