I solved my own problem, but thought I'd post it here in case it helps anybody.

I'm using an older version of Simple Image Gallery Pro, 2.5.8, before it became a component.When clicking in an image in the gallery it pops up, then immediately gets overlaid with a dark gray semi transparent image. I can barely see the image.

The problem is the slimbox2.css. The solution: Go into Extensions, Plugins, and locate your Simple Image Gallery Pro plugin. Change the "popup engine" to something other than Slimbox2.
