Try disabling the override for the K2 User module (rename the folder) to see if it is a template error.

I disabled the override (mod_k2_user, mod_k2_users, even com_k2) but the problem remainded.

The login worked fine but it redirected me to another menu item which produced a 404 error.
Make sure the redirection setting is properly setup.

Yes, the problem was redirecting to "login/logout" page. I did not noticed that it can be configured at the login module K2.
