K2 for Joomla 4

I can not portray my disgust with K2 putting us in the situation we are in now. I Hate the way you betrayed us. I am for the last year in the awkward position where I cannot upgrade our site due to thousands of K2 pages and categories intertwined that cannot be handled in any other platform component. I went for K2 because of their excellent ratings and always updated software that stood the test of time from the earliest versions. Never would I ever expected to run into the scenario we are in now.  Why not made K2 a paid component and continue developing, you surely had something going for. , and my career is going down the drain soon if I do not find a viable solution. I would have never in my life thought that K2 wold drop us like this.
K2. On your home page please add a "3" to your heading, to read: "Introducing K2, the powerful content extension for Joomla 3!
And while you are at it take the following out, since it will not apply any longer "It's no wonder that K2 powers some of the biggest and most popular Joomla! sites ever built worldwide!" I can imagine these companies would have paid for a new J4 version, unless it is a lie. At least they maintain the J3 version to be compatible with PHP8. Hmm. maybe I should not post this while I am upset, but here it goes.

I love K2 but I have used the SP Page Builder integration in hundreds of K2 articles. And SP Page builder has stopped supporting K2. Now I have to upgrade to J4, and it's a real dilemma as to what to do.

Nektarios,

We recently did this - except we started with a fresh J3 install, moved over just the database tables and some image files etc, and then installed just the components we chose to keep - which were compatible with J4. (This is also the point to migrate from K2 to com_content if you decide to do this, as there are no migration tools for K2 on J4.)

From there, we upgraded to J4 with a fresh template.

Tables for some components change between J3 and J4, so this method is safer than trying to work with a fresh install of J4.

Here is a good guide to rebuilding a J3 site:
schoolitexpert.com/web/joomla/rebuild-a-joomla-3-site

Hope this helps.

I would like to ask those who have upgraded k2 to J4 version if they use any k2 modules (like news rotation etc). Do they work after the upgrade?

Hi, News Show Pro GK5 works with K2J4 on Joomla 4 and 5 without any problems.

I noticed that all k2 extensions in joomla extensions are only compatible with j3 version.

Thank you.

Reading your posts on getk2.org about Joomla 4, I don't understand from your writing if K2 v2.11.20230505 works with Joomla 4. If after upgrading to Joomla 4 there is a K2 upgrade once doing so. Or you still haven't released a K2 version for Joomla 4. Can you clarify? Joomla gave me a warning before upgrading to Joomla 4 that your product could cause issues.

Since a bunch of older sites run K2 for all pages, if K2 does not work on Joomla 4 then I am hooped. Either I dump K2 and rebuild all my client's sites on the base article creator out of Joomla, or I scrap Joomla altogether and move to Wordpress. It is too bad Joomla seems to be on this downward trend and probably soon disappear.

K2 (2.11) is running with no problems or errors on my Joomla 3.10 site using php 8.1.25 on a Debian server. But without any old third-party K2 plugins, with a new Joomla template and with some third-party Joomla modules and plugins disabled. I have updated my site to a new look and I am waiting.

Like on the previous Joomla upgrade we have to wait because there is no alternative solution to K2. The eworkers version of K2 is good only to deal with the upgrade to Joomla 4 but it is not working in a real world due to multiple incompatibilities: cannot edit categories, menu items are generated incorrectly, incompatibility with SEO ...

Yes, I spent last week playing with Joomla 4 and then 5, trying the K24J4 fork, creating a new template compatible to J4 and check how difficult it is to make Sig Pro J4 compatible.
I must say it makes completely no sence to me all this complicated new structure introduced, all deprecated methods, the namespaces, etc... It is terrible for old webdesigners-forced-devs like me maintaining simple media oriented websites running smoothly since years. I made J a choice for its user friendlyness back then.
And - IT IS UNSUSTAINABLE. Nowadays we talk about sustainability and waist etc. It is such a waist of time and energy to rewrite all my code to obtain exactly the same effect like in J3.
I completely understand JoomlaWorks hesitation to upgrade K2 and Sig Pro and will stay with J3 until security risk forces me to upgrade.

K2 and Joomla 4

Yes, you've been telling us it's not dead but it's seems to all of us it is. Many of us have websites based totally on K2 and we are all in situation that we can't upgrade our sites to Joomla 4.
I've been using on my sites many other components that were made compatible with Joomla 4 on time. But K2 and SIG Pro not.
I'm sure many of us will accept to pay for K2 (to be honest I was surprised that was free for so many years) just like we accepted to pay for SIG Pro, but then we expect adequate support just like we have for other commercial components that were made ready for Joomla 4 a long time ago.
If you didn't succeed to make it compatible for Joomla 4 you could just provide some options for converting to Joomla Content component. But not, we have nothing from you and, if we want to do that, we have to find some third party extensions for converting from which none of them do the job completely.
I know that you have been listening complaints from us for a long a time but it's just that you put us in that situation by providing certain promises for Joomla 4 version by certain deadlines from which all of them were broken.
So it would be honest thing from you to provide us exact date of first stable version of K2 for Joomla 4 so we could know what to do-to wait or not. Nothing less, nothing more.

Best regards to Joomlaworks team and to all others.

Ran an upgrade fro J3 to J4 with K2 last night:
1. I installed the K2forJ4 on the J3 site.
2. I disabled K2 (and all extensions tagged by the migration potential problems check).
3. After upgrade to J4 was complete, enabled K2 which then threw a fatal missing class error.
4. I re-installed K2forJ4 - all is good now.

It seems there's no advantage to installing K2forJ4 on an existing J3 site - might as well install after the upgrade.

Looks like running K2forJ4 has 2 paths:
1. standard install on J3 then run upgrade
2. start with a fresh J4 instance (or a migrated J3 without K2), then install K2forJ4 and run a mysql data migration.
If path 1 is fraught with peril, I'd go with path 2 which sidesteps errors/warnings generated by the migration checks. The GitHub repository already notes one that came up (and apparently has been resolved).

As for the author(s), well. it seems unlikely that JW would be working under a cloak of anonymity after being heaped with oppobrium in this forum and elsewhere. Also, when opening K2forJ4 in the backed, a pesky upgrade reminder pops up that points to the latest official version on GitHub. JW is pretty scrupulous about version management.

Personally, I wish JW all the very best and am always grateful to them for creating K2. And of course, the author(s)
of K2forJ4 earns a huge thank you as well.

Just tried it on a freshly made J4 site (not upgraded from J3).
Categories and items work fine on back- and front-end.
Have not tested modules or template overrides, but fin'ora tutto va bene.

Has anyone else tested the K2 release for Joomla 4 on Github?

After some minor tweaks I have it running, stable, on a barebones Joomla 4.3.4 PHP8.1 Cassiopeia-theme install

Go to github
Search for repository:   K2ForJ4

Instructions
  1. Update K2 to the latest official version
  2. Update Joomla to the latest J3 version (Joomla! 3.10.11)
  3. Take a full backup (it is always a good idea).
  4. Download and install this K2 version.
  5. Upgrade Joomla3 to Joomla4
  6. Finally, we kindly ask you to test and report!

We agree. We will "Upgrade" to Joomla 4 and have also moved all content to Joomla. Can you suggest best way to Completely Remove K2 before we upgrade. Don't want any glitches to happen in the process. Thanks Much.

Joomla 4 support

Category: Simple Image Gallery PRO

I got the following answer from the support team. Fingers crossed that SigPRO for J4 will arive this year.

Hi there Peter, I'm currently working on K2 for J4 (which is a huge task). Once that is done (hopefully around September), SIGPro is next in line for an upgrade. You can always use the free version which is J4 compatible and once SIGPro is also available for J4, you can seamlessly upgrade. Regards, JoomlaWorks Support Team

K2 to com_content migration: how to migrate attachments?

Category: English K2 Community

Hi Catherine,
my solution is now, all done at Joomla 3 before upgrade:
- Make a export-list of K2-items with attachments, 1 attachment in a row. I need the columns itemID and name of the attachment-file
- Install JA K2 Data Migration plugin and migrate all K2-items, categories and fields to Joomla article
- Install Advanced Custom Fields
- Create a Custom Field File-upload, you need the field-ID for the import-script
- Move the download-files from /media/k2/attachments to /media/acfupload
- Than I replaced in my K2-item-export-list the old item-ID to the new item-ID. (Excel, SVERWEIS) Attention: By importing the items they became a new
- With a little php-script I created a sql-file an than I imported the file with phpMyAdmin to __fields_values, backup before.
This way I imported more than 500 files in 170 items, and it worked.

If there is an easier way, please let me know.

Best regards,
Gabi

Updating from sh404sef to 4SEF and K2

Category: English K2 Community

I upgraded to 4SEF. However, the generated URLs don't work as required, new menu items generated use the menu URLs. I have the K2 sh404sef plug-in configured to use the categories in the URL, but this doesn't work with 4SEF.

I have reverted back to sh404sef for now. Hopefully K2 for Joomla 4 will work with 4SEF correctly with a new K2 plugin.
