Try forcing all error reporting to none (if you have not already done so).
A PHP notice/error can break the JSON responses (it should have been printed in the actual response though).

I am not sure how to force all error reporting to none. Can you explain?

You can find this option in Joomla!'s global configuration. Set "Error Reporting" to None if the is not already set to none.
