I've read some posts about this but they were not sufficient for different reasons. How do I have my K2 items show up in Joomla's main front page, or how do I get rid of Joomla's front page so that I can just use K2's Content module? Either one should be able to get my desired results.

Change your menu item to whatever K2 version you want, so if you want it to show an item change the menu item with the star (*) to a K2>Item menu item.
