I would like to import my current cats into K2 allong with articles associated with them.  is there a way to do that?

When you are on Components -> K2 on the top right corner there is a button labeled Import Joomla! Content this will take the sections-categories-articles of the joomla content and set a tree of categories and their items on K2.
