Is there a way to upload pdf's and index them in K2? I need them to be searchable. I am starting a research site and most of the files are pdf.

Filenames are not searchable. This means that your .pdf files will not be indexed, on the other hand though that should not be much of an issue since if you provide a correct title and description, the item which contains the files will be indexed.
