K2 Power Tip: Stop K2 from Processing Images - K2 Hack

Category: English K2 Community

Hello K2ers,

I have noticed a number of K2 image questions, which I at one time also had. With trial & error, I discussed that you can remove the K2 image processing functionality, leaving the image you upload intact. So you can retain the image quality/compression of each image you upload to K2.

Find & comment out the following code for the image size you use as your main item image (e.g. Large):

File: administrator\components\com_k2\models\item.php
$handle->image_resize = true; $handle->image_ratio_y = true; $handle->image_convert = 'jpg'; $handle->jpeg_quality = $params->get('imagesQuality');

So that is looks like this (Large Image example):

//Large image
//$handle->image_resize = true;
//$handle->image_ratio_y = true;
//$handle->image_convert = 'jpg';
//$handle->jpeg_quality = $params->get('imagesQuality');

I hope you find this tip helpful.

Regards,

Ordering : K2 doesn't care

Category: English K2 Community

If the ordering option is the same for this tree of categories (as well as other params), I highly suggest you use your master category as the "category template" and have all others inherit params for the master.

If that's not the case, keep in mind this:
- We first check the ordering in each category
- If the ordering (and other params) is inherited from some other category, we check that category instead.
- Finally, we check if the ordering is being overridden inside a menu item. Keep in mind there are 2 different ordering controls inside the K2 category menu item, one for when linking to a single category and one for linking to multiple categories. Check which control is enabled.

Ordering is very important in huge media portal deployments. Keep in mind K2 has been extensively tested and working for many many years, powering some of the world's top news portals built with Joomla. So, if there was a bug in ordering inheritance, we would probably already know.

Now, in order for us to help you, I need you to explain your structure (be specific) and which ordering you want to achieve when you're calling the menu items and when you're viewing your K2 categories (if they are not linked via some menu item).

If needed, setup a demo site with K2 only, import the default Joomla sample data to get some articles, and experiment by modifying ordering only.

How to configure K2 Articles for Search

Category: English K2 Community

I have enabled K2's com_search plugin and all seems fine. However, I am trying to understand how to configure K2 articles for search. I have searched for hours trying to understand this with com_search but there isint much info on this. What I am wondering is:

1) When a user types in whatever keywords, does the search plugin looks for the keywords in meta descriptions only or even titles, tags, content body, etc.?

2) If I want an article to appear in search, do I need to enter that keyword as K2 tags? How does that work exactly?

3) Now a days most of the search keywords are generic and not specific title. For example, how can I change a type in my ford capri? . If someone searches something like this and the article doesnt exist, do I need to add all of these keywords variations as tags for that article so most of the keyword variations are covered and they show in search results?

Look, after using Google with their awesome algorithm com_search looks really bad for a normal internet user. Some people say some articles dont appear in search when they should unless the words matches. But I think com_search does give us a powerful feature if we can manually configure the articles ourself so we have full control over it. But I just dont know how with the above questions in mind. Hopefully you can share some tips that worked for you please...

Power K2 Calendar using Dates within Extra Fields

Category: English K2 Community

Ok, so it's a fairly straightforward idea, that I know is still technical:

I want to use the K2 Calendar module on my site, but instead of powering it by the date the article was published, use the date (or dates) added using the "dates" function in Extra Fields.

This is where it becomes technical, so bear with me...

I'm using the K2 Items to allow calendar functionality itself... Where this becomes a fun challenge is that some of the K2 items published could have 3 or 4 dates associated with it, so I can't exactly use the Date Created (as it ends up in the calendar once), and it's obviously not sensible to have to duplicate the page 3 or 4 times, considering in the feed, it ends up having multiple posts associated with it (and in a feed, having the same thing show up back to back? Totally looks like you messed up somehow.)

I'm totally comfortable with custom templates and doing really extreme modding to K2 (like, we're talking stuff like making full color k2 images show up on the front end as black and white, full screen, responsive backgrounds... I like to push my software sometimes!), but I've never really had a complete understanding on how date functionality works in php to begin with.

I also am not 100% sure how I could get the calendar to do the following, which is essentially the workflow I'm trying to achieve:
  1. load a K2 item in the calendar
  2. get the calendar to grab the data from the extra fields
  3. process extra fields info inside the calendar module
  4. extract only the fields that show dates, and have that override the dates used in the calendar's default functionality
  5. get it to loop so that every date that is added will appear in the calendar module

If you have any suggestions, or further questions, I'm open!

Thanks!

i hope that is not the case. many people have ready tags for their products like :

action, battle, big drums, cinematic, courage, dark, determined, energetic, epic, futuristic, game, heroic, hits, hybrid, intense, intro, massive, noble, orchestral, patriotic, powerful, proud, risers, strings, strong, tension, title, trailer, triumphant, war

K2 post Artikel per Mail

Category: Offizielle deutsche Gemeinschaft

Hallo zusammen,

Vielen Dank schon mal!

Connect Image Gallery tab to Phoca Gallery?

Category: English K2 Community

I'm pretty sure the 'hack' that you found on the Phoca forums was an older modification that the Phoca Plugin needed in order to work on a K2 item.

In my case, I wound up using the "Multiple Images" plugin for K2:

extensions.joomla.org/extensions/extension-specific/k2-extensions/20544

Works great, not as powerful as PhocaGallery, but it resizes and lets you do captions / credits on each photo, using the "image" tab in K2...

Re: K2 (Sub-)Templating Using Different Templates

Category: English K2 Community

Okay, so.. The text in my earlier topic wasn't showing for no reason so here is the problem again, this time a little shorter :)

I've read the article @ getk2.org about templating & subtemplating your K2-powered Joomla! website and it left me with some issues. As the title says I'm using multiple templates on 1 site and that works out in the default Joomla! templating just fine. Now here was the tricky part, I am designing my website to work with different colors bound to different menu items (or, in K2's case, categories).

So, following that tutorial didn't give me satisfactory results and that might be because i'm letting it communicate with more than 1 template in my collection. Here's an example of my structure:

.../templates/TEMPLATE1/html/com_k2
.../templates/TEMPLATE2/html/com_k2
.../templates/TEMPLATE3/html/com_k2

Where the tutorial stops after just the first template. Now, copying the folder as described in that tutorial (.../components/com_k2/templates) only works on the first template I applied it too. In other words, when I'm in the backend and try to bind a template to my category only "TEMPLATE1" shows up..

Maybe I am missing the most obvious solution, I don't know. Hope you guys can help me out here :)

Thx William I sort of figured that, I had a bit of a winge in another post about what K2 needs, mainly it was about setting up a Tips & Tricks Category on here with definitive Tutorials on getting started with K2 Setting Up First Category, First Item, An easy to follow guide to using extra fields and a few examples of what & how they can really extend the power of K2 and the same again for creating K2 Template Overides. I have noticed that you are the main person who seems to answer posts on here, and I am sure that you have also noticed that the same problems seem to appear over & over.

Firstly I would like to thank William White for his "above and beyond" support. Sorry that we couldn't solve this issue together. The truth is that I have been scratching my head since I installed K2 2.5.6 onto a site update (small site, so just re-creating in J! 2.5.4). This problem was the tip of the iceberg with another site using 2.5.6 heading into serious spasms showing a memory limit error in php.ini when accessing a module which calls K2 categories. This other site has 3 categories and around 30 items at present, so nothing fancy.

Head scratching getting very serious I did the simple thing. Uninstalled K2 2.5.6 and installed K2 2.5.5 and...

NO PROBLEMS.

Guys, there appears to be a SERIOUS bug in the category tools in 2.5.6. My original issue was that I couldn't select a category in the front-end. This moved on, in another site, to being a memory limit error. My php.ini is set to 128Mb as I develop on localhost and have 8Gb in my computer running Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit....so no power issues there at all.

Please note that this is a serious issue and I am not the only person showing this kind of issue since the implementation of 2.5.6 - NOT an RC.

BTW I am respectful that this is a free component, but I have purchased both Frontpage Slideshow and Simple Image Gallery Pro with your company so am an invested customer.

How to structure my blog categories?

Category: English K2 Community

Hi everyone

I'm developing a site for a record label and intend to use K2 to power the blog parts of the site.

There's two main blogs:
  • Main blog
  • Shop blog

And then there's sub-blogs for each artist. I'd like to be able to extract artist-specific posts on artist-pages. And since the shop also deals artists signed elsewhere and other labels I also need to extract label and artist-specific blog bogs for their pages.

The shop blog should NOT appear on the site blog.

Should I create 2 categories for the two main blogs and subcategories for each artist and label? The problem with this apprach could be that I'd end up with multiple subcategories with the same names (but with different parent categories), which can be confusing...

Any better ideas?
