K2 SEO issue - Can it be fixed?

Category: English K2 Community

I was the one who wrote this review: extensions.joomla.org/extensions/authoring-a-content/content-construction/8061#rev-135014

Since I can't respond in this review directly, I will do it here.

What you fail to understand is that K2 simply follows the Joomla! framework guidelines when it comes to URLs. For example, take this URL from a recent Joomla! announcement on joomla.org (it's the core Joomla! article system):

The URL is www.joomla.org/announcements/release-news/5471-joomla-3-0-2-released.html

But one can easily do this too:
www.joomla.org/announcements/release-news/5471-joomla-3-0-2-released-wow-some-extra-stuff-on-the-URL

Both URLs will render the same page of course. Now, this is not a bad thing SEO wise. SEO - which you fail to understand obviously - is not related in any way to how one or more users can manipulate a site's URLs. This is stupid if you think about it... SEO is about ordering/organizing a site's content so that search engines can pick up that content easily. The easiest the better for a site.

Dear lefteris, fotis or whoever replied to my review, yes I am very well aware that K2 uses Joomla's guidelines to build URLs, but what YOU fail to realize is that the issue isn't the possibility to add some stuff to any URL without getting a 404 error, it's K2's behaviour to build URLs, which depend on what page they are created, that all point to the exact same content.

Have you installed sh404sef and saw how many duplicated URLs you have? Your database will be bloated with thousands of duplicated URLs and this can't be good. Why is it so difficult to make for every item one unique URL?

Another huge problem are tags. Tags aren't assigned to menu items (and no, nobody in their right mind would create 2000 menu items for their 2000 tags), so depending on what page you currently are, you always get a different URL to the same tag. And I'm not speaking about the complex non-SEF urls, but about the SEF urls of Joomla's native component.

For examlple, on your frontpage you have articles with many tags. The URLs of those tags are as follows:

domain.com/component/k2/itemlist/tag/example

Now if you go to article view you would get a URL to the exact same tag as follows:

domain.com/category/subcategory/itemlist/tag/example

If you go one category up you would get this:

domain.com/category/itemlist/tag/example

And these are not made up, they are real URLs and of course google will pick them up and categorize them as duplicated URLs.

Don't you see this issue? Is it Joomla's fault? Do we have to install a SEO component? Then why doesn't Flexicontent have this issue? Why does the K2 hack from above resolve this issue and why couldn't you submit this hack? Answer this question please and don't ignore it like you did in the review.

Oh and just because Joomla's native SEO is useless for production sites doesn't mean that every component should use the same guidelines for building URLs.

Anyone can read the URL you posted back to the K2 Community, but sorry, I'm not admitting anything.

Of course you did. You implied it by saying we should either install a SEO extension or create dozen of menu items.

As for the other claims...
a) "other extensions offer better URLs": if they are native extensions, no they don't

You mean flexicontent? If flexicontet creates unique URLs for each tag and K2 not, then certainly their URLs are better.

b) "K2 support is bad": define bad support for a free extension first. We're not elitists. If we were, we wouldn't have released K2, better yet, we wouldn't have launched a community.

Bad support is when people create threads asking for help to resolve issues that are ignored by the devs for years. Just have a look in your own forum. So many unresolved threads and you still claim in an reply to a review that the community is very active? Yes, they are active in asking questions, which remain unresolved.

Regardless if your extension is free or not, if you make a product and offer it to endconsumers you should support them. Look at other communities and other FREE extensions, there are hundreds of them and are supported by the devs that don't earn a single penny off of it. If you are not ready to provide FREE support for a FREE product, then you should have made K2 commercial in the first place or just don't release it at all.

You might wanna look for some other CMS perhaps. I strongly suggest Google's Blogger cause a) it's built by Google (= "beautiful" SEO for the paranoid ones) and b) it's free like K2.

Give us a break will ya?

What I and I think everyone who read your replies to K2 reviews noticed is that you have a very strong attitude. It's like you lash out on everybody who criticizes K2, whether it's justified or not. Perhaps you think because K2 is free, it's ok to do that.

Finally just a heads-up regarding other SEO matters in K2. You claim K2's SEO is excellent and yet I had to rework the whole K2 template to make it more search engine friendly. For instance you are using wrong heading tags for article titles in blog/category view. Both articles and sidebar content use h3 tags. This means that you degrade K2 articles to sidebar content. But yeah, keep pretending K2's SEO is excellent.

:unsure:

Exploiting tags and exploiting Joomla

Category: English K2 Community

I currently do not use K2 on my website. I have been examine it as a candidate however. I have to admit that I find Joomlanis often very limited and K2 seems to follow in the tradition if missed opportunities, which. I ascribe to lack of central planning.

My website uses FJ Related Blog Articles Component which achieves, to a limited extent, what I require. The site (www.PalermoProtocol.com) is dedicated to the issue of human trafficking and its victims. I can list articles (showing the first few words of some articles) based on a selection of keywords. This allows me to create, in effect, a database of articles for a particular term based on a number of keywords. Say, for example, I want to create an FJ Related menu item for articles that refer to the United Nation. I create the menu item, advising which, if any, category articles are to be used and I list the keywords to search for (eg. UN, U.N., UNHCR, UNODC, ILO, etc). Thus all UN articles are pulled together transparently.

What fascinates me with Joomla, and here too with K2, that having extended capabilities, such as the addition of tags, that little priority seems to be given to the logical steps that should follow from enhancements. At present there seems to be no equivalent in K2 that permits me to replicate what I have already achieved, albeit with limts, even though K2 should be naturally more attuned to just this kind of undertaking.

I have researched K2 and learned that it s possible to create menu items for one tag, that there are extensions which it possible to have Joomla suggest similar articles based in the current article and I have learned too that there are others who have tried, in K2, to achieve what I now seek. Yet this s not possible. It ought to be fairly logical that a system which introduces tags would have less need for categories, and more need for tag-related technologies.

Alas ths has been what I have come of experience of Joomla over the last few years. It often gets you 98% of the way towards the goal, only to fail at the last hurdle.

Made what I hope is a good SEO change. I wanted to change my item/article titles from H2 to H1. I checked with Google tech support and having a couple of H1 tags on the page is okay as long as they make sense. I am hoping the change will give my health articles a little more relevance. I'm using a Joomlart template (JA_Anion) Joomla v2.5.8 and K2 v2.5.7. I tried updating my K2 to 2.6.2 but it broke the Advanced Module Manager plugin/display which I really need so I am hoping they can fix that so I can upgrade to the latest version.

So here is how you do it:

Download the "your-template/html/com_k2/default/item.php" file and change the following bit of code. You can see the H2 tags. Just replace them with the H1 and upload...yer good to go.

<?php if($this->item->params->get('itemTitle')): ?>
<!-- Item title -->
<h2 class="itemTitle">
<?php if(isset($this->item->editLink)): ?>
<!-- Item edit link -->
<span class="itemEditLink">
<a class="modal" rel="{handler:'iframe',size:{x:990,y:550}}" href="<?php echo $this->item->editLink; ?>">
<?php echo JText::_('K2_EDIT_ITEM'); ?>
</a>
</span>
<?php endif; ?>

<?php echo $this->item->title; ?>

<?php if($this->item->params->get('itemFeaturedNotice') && $this->item->featured): ?>
<!-- Featured flag -->
<span>
<sup>
<?php echo JText::_('K2_FEATURED'); ?>
</sup>
</span>
<?php endif; ?>

</h2>

and don't forget to make regular Akeeba backups...I spent several hours trying to figure out how to do this, changing many files both css and php and just as I figured it out I broke my site. Luckily I had made a backup last week and was able to restore the site and only had to add a few articles that had been added since the backup.

How to disable word limit for comments

Category: English K2 Community

In the administration of the K2 comments module, when I hover over Comment word limit it says:
If word limit is enabled any html tags will be stripped off to prevent the page markup from breaking.

1. So, if word limit is disabled, does that is meaning html tags will not be stripped off?

2. If the answer is YES, is there a value to input to disable word limit?

Thank you in advance

If you have already embeded the appropriate docman document into your k2 item, is there some relationship between the k2 itemid and the docman plugin that your using.
I can most likely create a k2 override that will insert the proper tag for you in the k2 item or category display or both automatically and also be hidden unless the user is registared.

Lefteris, this issue is more than a year old and you still pretend that those duplicated URLs are not K2's fault despite someone just proved that those issues can be resolved by a hack?

You really thought that people would make menu items for each tag? Are you admitting that K2's SEO is bad without an SEO extension?

Need help with layout

Category: English K2 Community

I've used k2 before, but for whatever reason on my site (it may be my joomla template?) a number shows up below the Author name. Also a white block appears before the articles (where the catagory name would usually go). I've tried mostly everything I can think of to get rid of these with minimal success. You can see what I am talking about at www.9thninja.net/index.php/ninjablogs

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

K2 plugins in layout view options for tag listings

Category: English K2 Community

I'm looking at getting content plug-ins into the tag layout as well. Did you get any insight on this? Obviously I'm looking to avoid hacking the core K2 tag layout- did you find such a solution? Maybe we can send a features request. It's conspicuous by its absence.

Being able to select items for display

Category: English K2 Community

I am trying to publish a newsletter. I want three sections. A headline section, a normal article section and a shorts section. I don't want the display just to headline the latest article as this may be a 'short' article that should not be in the headline. I can't see anyway to do this in K2.

Assuming I'm correct, I wonder if it would be possible to add filtering (including by tag or extra fields) to the options in edit category. I'm sure this would have many applications. Users can search by these criteria, so it should not be a great effort to add this as an option for the designer of the website.

Any chance?

That's wrong, it should be

So technically speaking, the og tags in K2 at the moment aren't working. Now to figure how to disable those faulty tags in K2...

I fixed it here
libraries/joomla/document/html/renderer/head.php. This allowed me to not have to add all the other code except the facebook app id

Set up a Magazine as Joomla.com does

Category: English K2 Community

Well, I spent some time thinking on it and this is what I'm going to do to have the same Table of Content ("In this Issue" module) as Joomla.com does in its Magazine (magazine.joomla.org)...

Set up a "Related by category" module using the standard K2 Content module and Modules Anywhere extension (www.nonumber.nl/extensions/modulesanywhere) as explained in this video:
www.slurpitup.com/joomla/how-to-add-related-items-by-category-in-k2-joomla
Except that the Modules Anywhere code {module Related by category|category_id=...} will be used in a new custom module named "In this Issue" rather than in K2 template files.

I will configure the "Related by category" module so that:
- All the items (articles) in the same category as the current item (or category when in Category View) are displayed
- Items are sorted by item order

Doing this, I will get a Table of Content without sections (Editors Introduction, Project News etc.). Remember, sections are tags in Joomla Magazine... So I will override the module template so that when displaying items, each time the tag of an item is different from the previous item listed, this tag is displayed.

That's it! No code hack, just some modules configuration and template override, I think that's the best I can do!

Set up a Magazine as Joomla.com does

Category: English K2 Community

Hello,

I am new to K2 and try to set up a Magazine just like Joomla does on its site (magazine.joomla.org). This is exactly what I need: Magazine issues at given dates with a table of contents, a list of issue contributors, featured articles etc.

I could not figure out what is the module used for the table of content. This module displays all the articles in the current category (categories are: 2012 November, 2012 December etc.), organised by tag (tags are content section: Editors Introduction, Project News etc.).

If anybody knows...

You can create a copy of your template file in your templates directory (entire file) with a different name say beez4.

Edit the templatedetails.xml file - change the name and description tags to the new name
If there is a language directory rename the beez3 to beez4

Goto extension manager - discover - and tick the new template - then install

Make changes to the new templates item.php

Assign the template to the menu choices you want it to work with

K2 overriding will remain the same.

Dont know if module is prepared for this in its PHP files, as category and item.
I am just trying to make it works with simple menu link to K2 categories. But i have that damn problem that Css4K2 is not working OK in Joomla 3.

I cannot force my setting in menu link for custom K2 template, and simply cannot test anything.
Css4K2 give advantage to K2 category template setting, not Menu K2 link setting, in simple word it is not working.

I know it is easy and possible.
- Chose Menu link
- Chose several (or one) categories.
- Disable aspolutely everything from view.
- In your custom K2 template category_item.php disable options for K2 to check for settings for extra fields, if they are activated for view in category listing, or not.
- And put your code for custom /specific) extra field.

This line is important, disable checking in K2 category parameters.

<?php if($this->item->params->get('itemExtraFields') && count($this->item->extra_fields)): ?>

There is not point i test it on my old Joomla instlation because you use latest 2.6.2 K2 version. And latest modules, codes.
