I developed a recipes site with K2, it will be ready in about 2 weeks (online i mean, because now it`s on my pc :) )

so if you want help, send me a msg

sharky said:Simon Wells (K2 Support) said:Hi SharkyOK, with K2 one of the main featured for you would be the nested categories, or categories within a category. An example for you would beMeat Dishes (category)Pork Dishes (sub category)Chicken Dishes (sub category)Lamb Dishes (sub category)Desserts (category)Cakes (sub category)Ices (sub category)Puddings (sub category)Blackberry (sub sub category)Strawberry (sub sub category)That would be a start of a structure. Then you create your K2 Items (replaces joomla articles)In your K2 items, you can then set tags as keywords to link the items. You can also create extra field groups for ingredients that maybe you would need.I have some documents over at K2joom.com which might help you get started or feel free to post more specific questions here, there are plenty of helpful users in the forums.SimonK2 Support

Many thanks for your reply.

I am now looking at it and came to think that it can be overwhelming many categories which can come in pull down menu on sight, but I have to try to get it to work as good as possible when I now want to use K2 for the task can be as low a standard template (document) which is set up to handle the recipes in K2?

Yay! You found the problem.

I thought it might be the template, but when it happened with 2 different templates i thought maybe it was a bug. But come to think of it both templates are Gavick...

I'll change that little bullet and get it out of the way.

Thanks again!

Hi,

No, it is not possible to assign an Item to more than one category.
You could consider using Tags to link the items to appear as if they are in multiple categories.
For example, if you had a bike that you want to appear in Cross Country and All Mountain, then use those categories names as tags.

Hope that helps.

Stray bullet points covering tags

Category: English K2 Community

I love K2, but I have a problem with the bullet points covering the first letter of each tag in the tag cloud.
When I installed K2 on my first website I thought this had more to do with the template. But now that I've put it on a second website using a different template and got the same result I'm not sure.

Is there any hack I can do in the default k2 template to add a little cushion between the bullet point and the tag?

Check out this page for an example of the problem I am having:

Can someone see if I'm on the right track to create a catalog of sports memorabilia?

Category: English K2 Community

I am a Joomla user with a moderate amount of experience (not a beginner, far from an expert) and am trying to figure out if I am on the right track. This is the first time I am using K2 and I am trying to create a catalog of sport memorabilia products. This was my plan:
Create categories using the type of product (ie: signed photo's, jersey's, bat's, glove's, etc.)

Use tags to cross-categorize by type of sport (baseball, basketball, football, etc.), team and player (so a for instance, a Derek Jeter signed photograph would be in the "photograph" category tagged with "Jeter", "Yankees" and "baseball")

This is going to be for display only, not selling on the site. Ideally I want visitors to be able to search by type of product, team, sport or player. The big question I have is will this setup give me the ability to do that? What K2 extensions might be helpful in an endeavor such as this?I don't really understand the extra fields part of the component. Do you think that it is something that would be helpful to me in this?Any assistance/guidance would be greatly appreciated.Brian

I am also having trouble using the RSS link from my K2 category.

This is the RSS link
openbarmusicnyc.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=itemlist&layout=category&task=category&id=2&Itemid=125&format=feed

But I get the following error message from feedburner when I paste it in:
The URL does not appear to reference a valid XML file. We encountered the following problem: Error on line 128: The element type "description" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "".

Where is the XML that it is referencing and can I just add the matching end-tag to it to make it work.

Thanks,

Hi, I had the same problem.

Disabling the MetaGenerator plug in, solved the problem.

However, it does re-appear the moment one enables the plug-in. I think it could be a compatibility problem with the MetaGenerator plug in.

My options were: which is the most useful, K2 or MetaGenerator?

K2 was my choice. So I've disabled MetaGenerator and am prepared to live without it for now.

Perhaps someone with the skills (I'm to new at this) can look into where the problem originates - K2 or MetaGenerator.

Hope that helps

Category view and Item view

Category: English K2 Community

Hi - just started playing around with K2 and so far have been enjoying it very much.
I'm working on a portfolio area for my site. I'd like to use Rokbox as my image gallery, and I can add the code in the k2 article with no issues, all works fine. I've set up a menu item for category view to display all works under the tag "print". However, for the category view, I'd like to use an image, and in the item view, it'd like to use the rokbox. Right now I only have the rokbox and no item image since I didn't want both appearing, but that means that my category view has the rokbox and I don't want visitors clicking on that - I want them to have to click on the more info so they can read the full descriptions with benefit of the extra fields I've set up.

Is there a way to have the item image listed in the category view, but the item view have only the rokbox I've embedded in the article?

As an alternative, could I possibly show everything in the category view without visitors having to click on the more info? So the article and extra fields all show up for each item tagged in that category?

Thanks in advance for your help!

:)

How K2.2 grouped in categories, to show them all together then?

Category: English K2 Community

Hello, dear friends JoomlaWorks
I'm using this component on my site great news and I am interested to know, as I can combine categories and then display them all together as happens with (Categories and Sub Categories) Clicking from one menu item.
So far from what I've seen, could only show, one item, a category, a label or user portfolio. But .. For example if I chose to use a label to group categories, do not see how adding a tag, by default, to a category?. If you find a way to add a label to an article, but .. and in my half the editors are unlimited users, I can not instruct each of them to remember to add the label for each item on publication.
Is there any way to add a default label for a category?, In any event, returning to my original question, Is there any way to group categories, and then to display them all together? ... Thanks for your help, really, this is very important to manage both content and many categories together, thanks again.

Hi Mark,
Thank you so much for your detailed responses to my questions. I understand there is no one magic component that does every thing for real estate sites. I am worried that using multiple modules and components will make it difficult for the agents to maintain their sites.

Have you looked at components such as The Thinkery Intellectual Property? I know this component is expensive but it does have most of what real estate agents need under one roof. The challenge is it is becoming difficult to find free or reasonably priced extensions anymore.
cheers
Tura

Mark Banks said:Hi Tura, thanks for the positive feedback and comments. The site has gone through a couple of changes since the original post, though K2 2.2 is the primary component for content/property display. It is also going to handle a new location/village category that the client is adding to the site.

Frontpage:
The layout is a YooTheme template, which was adopted over the old Praise Estate theme.
Menu is a Joomla menu, not a K2 category based menu.
Featured Property and Latest Property modules are handled by JBamboo's microblog module.
Slideshow is Jbamboo's slideshow V3 module.
The remainder is all K2 Content Tool module

Property detail pages:
slightly modified K2 pages with
Simple Image Gallery Pro (JoomlaWorks) for the gallery
AllVideos for (future) video files.
Google Maps plugin (k2joom) - (though a small issue with Lat:Long entries having to be reversed)

XMAP for sitemap and full property listing page.

Contact form CK Forms - easy to use AND it plays nicely with Jextend Finder.

Search - handled by Jxtended Finder - which is currently at RC1 stage. Had a few initial issues with it, however support from Rob at Jxtended has been 100% excellent. The Finder component does much, much more than can be seen on the site (it can return indexed results based on natural language, K2 category, k2 items, k2 extra fields (text area/fields), k2 tags, PDF's etc.). We're just waiting for the final stable release to become available before changes are made. The 'search by' menu option is created using pre-defined search filters.

Tried out several other very good K2 compatible add-ons - JezArguo and Praise2 slideshows, client preferred the jbamboo.

Comments for devs...
Still waiting for Front Page Slideshow to be released... is it really 8 months now ;-(
And would REALLY like to see an easy to use TAB system (for client content entry) be made available for content/item pages

AND a new feature for SIG PRO added - the ability to use default captions (i.e. Click Here) UNLESS a custom caption file is found in the gallery folder. Currently, it one or the other which we have found limits flexibility across different categories.

hope that answers your questions,
Regards
Mark

In addition to K2 what other component did you use to display the properties details including the gallery? For instance, If I follow your "Properties" menu to "apartments" I see property details and gallery. It is great site by the way.
Some of my clients would like to use a Category of K2 as blog and also to display property listings. I am reviewing some real estate components as well and I found the good ones are quite pricey. If it is possible to design site like yours without using real estate component, my client would be happy. Please share you thoughts and experiences.

K2 - Myths and Realities of K2 as a CCK - ACL, Native SEF, Support, etc. - Need EXPERT input

Category: English K2 Community

i am very sorry to say, but K2 will def not live up to your expectations out of the box. What you want requires heavy modding. K2 does not have a (good) ACL system. I can't even get it to work. I have no idea why it has groups since you can't set permissions to articles/categories.

Also, it seems that your understanding of the CMS business is lacking. You can't just "plug" something in together to make it work. It requires a lot of time and engineering skills. Something the developers have no time for, and professionals charge you a lot of money for.

I suggest getting sh404SEF. Works fine with k2.

Support: I have no idea what that is... Support does not exist on this board. The dev's rarelly comment on anything (with rare i mean a meteor striking you on the head, while being laid by the first lady on her boat whily prez obama is having a sip of vodka with putin. Doesn't happen too often right? ) and 2% of the users here are actually dev's. No one ever answers any threads. the forums are exploding with questions which never get answered. Simple feature requests never get lived up to (I STILL WANT TO BE ABLE TO TAG MY FUCKING CATEGORIES!).

I'm telling you, K2 is a joke. I wish i could get rid of it, but at the time there was nothing my site could use so i am officialy stuck with it until i figure out how to export all the data and then import it into another CCK. I suggest getting Yootheme's ZOO CCK or Mightyextensions' Resources.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but K2 is a joke. It would have been super duper if the dev's were just here to help us out a little.

Assholes.

"Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /plugins/search/k2.php on line 142"

Another thread points to this one, but as far as I can tell my issue is not resolved in this thread.

I've setup a test site with the latest 2.3svn to see if the issue is resolved there, but rather than being fixed the functionality to search tags seems to have been removed. The option to Enable search in tags has gone from the k2 search plugin configuration, and I cannot get it to pick up tags in a search result.

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this issue in 2.2, and whether or not the search by tag function is going to be included in 2.3?

Thanks.

How can I add corresponding category to "Related items (by tag)"

Category: English K2 Community

Hello all, hoping someone can help me get this figured out.I want to add what category the related items by tag belong to for my users. The link and title are already being fetched by the system and I can fetch the category id using the code below - BUT - the category name doesn't actually exist in the jos_k2_items db table that this is apparently grabbing from.  <?php if($this->item->params->get('itemRelated') && isset($this->relatedItems)): ?>  <!-- Related items by tag -->    <div class="itemRelated">        <h3><?php echo JText::_("Related items (by tag)"); ?></h3>        <ul>            <?php foreach($this->relatedItems as $key=>$item): ?>            <li class="<?php echo ($key%2) ? "odd" : "even"; ?>">                <a href="<?php echo $item->link ?>"><?php echo $item->title; ?></a> (Part of <?php echo $item->catid; ?>)            </li>            <?php endforeach; ?>        </ul>        <div class="clr"></div>    </div>    <?php endif; ?>I've tried replacing <?php echo $item->catid; ?> with lots of other variables, including <?php echo $item->category->name; ?> which is used in "generic.php" to pull the category name for the item tag search results list.Anyone have an idea how I can access the jos_k2_categories table to grab the name, or replace the catID displayed in the code above with the text name?Without the category reference the related by tags feature is dramatically diminished for me.Thanks!Case

Very very important:
Haven't you noticed that the K2 component is broken inside the items in the backend? You need to re-install the component.

Now the SIG (free) doesn't have to be enabled (I took the liberty to disable it), in fact doesn't have to be installed at all once you have SIG Pro. I changed the path inside SIG Pro to the right one, which is the default (images/stories). K2 doesn't use this path anyway. The path is if you want to use the tags {gallery}{/gallery}.

menu items pointing to tags - joomfish can't translate them

Category: English K2 Community

Hello
I am translating my site to English (Polish is original). All menus,
modules and tags are translated, K2 item translated only partially. I
have installed Joomfish 2.0.4  and K2.v3 SVN
The module: Gallery of works (searching K2 items by K2 tags) - works
perfect. There is a problem with bottom menu "Glass applications"
(searching K2 items by K2 tags from menu). Module shows that K2 tags are
not translated ( they are) and therefore menu doesn't show any
position. I translated both modules in the same way. I tried to turn off
the core SEF with no results.

Any ideas, please?
