Simple Image Gallery (not PRO) does not open WebP images was created by JoomlaWorks
Webp is a popular delivery format but not a popular source format. As such, it's was never supported as a "source" format in SIG.

I'll make sure to add it in the next update.

Indeed there is support for .webp in SIG v4.1.0 (added over a year ago): github.com/joomlaworks/simple-image-gallery/blob/master/plugin/jw_sig/includes/helper.php#L133

Can you provide a direct link to one of your .webp images so I can test them out as well?

It's already in. WEBP images are supported as source images.
