The plugin is specifically built for Joomla articles. We do however support Disqus in K2 via SocialConnect (among other features): www.joomlaworks.net/extensions/commercial/socialconnect

It depends. Disqus is more social, has better antispam obviously etc. etc. With SocialConnect (and its Disqus integration for K2) you get a lot more for sure.
K2's comments system is intentionally basic and will obviously load faster.
It really depends on your needs.

I've downloaded and installed the disqus component and its plugin for joomla, but I can't find the settings that allow it to work in the items of a K2 category . Do we have to get the social connect to make it work ?

The free plugin supports Joomla Articles only.
For K2 you'd have to use SocialConnect (which frankly adds more than just Disqus, so it's really worth it) or some other extension just for Disqus embedding. You can also built Disqus into your K2 template overrides (if you have any, or just create your own getk2.org/documentation/tutorials/templating-with-k2-and-the-concepts-of-sub-templates).
