Can you say to me what I have to do so that the images adapt themselves: Slideshow viewport width of the module = 700; height 200.
I also changed Default resize width ( px ) for uploaded images to 700 all my images have 700 pixels of wide but are returned to 500. While the images of the demo categorie adapt themselves about are the width and the assigned height.

Only bigger images can be resized to smaller. Not the opposite.

I have the same problem.  I can't find a way of sizing images that fit the screen in the same way that the demo images do. 

For example,  demo file "theinvasion.jpg" is a jpeg with a size of 740 x 480, resolution 72dpi.  I have uploaded a photo of exactly the same image size and it appears to get resized down to around 500 px wide.  Why is this?

There's nothing in the documentation that covers image resizing that I can find.

How do I overcome this?

Could you please provide me with a link to the slideshow?
In addition check your FPSS component settings that are related to the slide dimensions.
