Can someone tell me how the build in "Related by Tags" function in K2 works?

Is it enough if just one tag is the same?
Can it be setup so fx. X tags must be the same before it is marked as related?

AFAIK, it is enough if just one tage is the same, and there is no setup for X tags must be the same before it is marked as related.

I think this functionality, specifying a number of tags to mark them as related, can be done by customizing the related module.

On that note, if the articles have many matching tags (say some articles has 3 matching tags, some has 4-5,etc..), then when displaying the articles in related section, would it then sort the articles based on the order of most number of tags matching to least number of matching tags? Or is it sorted based on publish date of the related articles or something else?

The articles are being sorted by their creation date.

So does it mean that it will show an article first (if the creation is first) even if only 1 tag is matching while the other articles that have more matching tags will still wont be prioritized? Isnt it better to list the articles based on the most number of matching tags? If it only need to match 1 tag and if its based on creation date for the list, then there could be cases that a lot of articles should have the same lists as related articles and the more relevant articles (the ones with more matching tags) will be hidden if their creation date is cant be fit in that order.

@Krikor: Kavadas's suggestion was to perhaps add an ordering option for Related items similar to K2 content module. This could be added to version 3. Pretty neat idea huh? I am happy with that. :)

First of all - thanks for the answer to my question.

Personally I think the whole ”related article” function is not flexible enough. This is not just for K2, but also standard Joomla.

In my world related articles is not just about tags. We are also talking about category, creation date, time frame, hits, voting, author, etc. I would love to be able to combine all these options to get my related articles.

Example: I want to see all articles with minimum 2 matching tags, but only from the categories “Living” and “Sport” and the articles cannot be older than 1 year.

or

Articles with any matching tags, any category, but minimum 1000 hits the last month from author X.

I might be wrong, but I haven´t seen any components/modules/plugins that can do this – or just a nice part of it.

In my case I would need it for K2. If you know of any add-ons that can do this, please let me know.

Tags should be the same. Even one should do the trick.
After that, the most recent items are being pulled and shown.

How can I change it so K2 choose random items instead of recent items?
