Subcategories from multiple categs. all in 1 page was created by Alexander Ioannidis
Hi all,

I need to display subcategories of multiple categories on one page, without their items. Have tried fiddling with all the settings, but It seems I have hit a wall.

Here goes an example:

Dogs (upper level category)
- Big Dogs (subcategory)
- Average Dogs (subcategory)
- Small Dogs (subcategory)
Cats (upper level category)
- Big Cats (subcategory)
- Average Cats (subcategory)
- Small Cats (subcategory)

So I want the following to appear on my page:

Big Dogs, Average Dogs, Small Dogs
Big Cats, Average Cats, Small Cats

Any ideas? Just selecting more than 1 category at the menu item options doesn't work. Best I've got so far is to display subcategories from one category...

You need to set the Catalog mode to on in the parent category and set enable the subcategories block.

Thank you for your reply, I have done this already, the parent categories are set to catalog mode and subcategory blocks are enabled. The subcategories contain 1-5 items each (none are empty).

Also, in the menu item I have selected the two parent categories and set "Fetch items from children categories" to No.

Now, this gives me a blank page (no subcategories showing)

You have to use a K2 Categories menu pointing only to the parent category.
The "Fetch items from children categories" setting should be left the same as the defaut value.

The screenshot was not uploaded.

You can also use a service like imgur.

@Alexander Ioannidis

You cannot display the children categories of two categories. You need to select a single category there if you want to display the children categories.

Thank you for the reply Lefteris, this would be a great option to have in future K2 versions, I think.

Is there another way I can get this done? By using a K2 extension, putting a K2 module in an article page, or something else? I am ok with using code, too.

This will not be added in future versions. At least not this way. It's a matter of logic. Catalog mode is the same as browsing filesystem folders in your computer. You need to get in to a folder to view it's contents. The only thing you can do is move both "Dogs" and "Cats" under the same category ( let's say "Pets" ) and then link to that category with catalog mode enabled.

Understood, thank you Lefteris.

This is an unusual project, where K2 has been used as a product catalog, but the subcategories are used as products and the Items as product variations (different editions of the same product).

I guess I can try and build the "product grid" manually, since there are relatively few products (approx.20).

Thanks again to both of you for your time. I have been using Joomla for many years but have just recently started working with K2. Great extension.
