As you can see some of the images have a black thumbnail but when you click on the link you can see the larger image.

Any idea what might be going on?

Your template has hard-coded a black box around all images. The result is that you always get the black box, even for items that do not have images. So you need to either add the images to items that do not have or fix your template.
