Implementing search on site: K2 extension, or joomla? was created by Brian
Hi,
I have several types of content. News, as well as documents (pdfs). I am trying to figure out the best way to add a search box. I see there is this ability through K2 Tools module. I have also read people mentioning plugins. And I have also noticed there are some free joomla extensions for search that work with K2 items. Can anyone recommend a simple, free solution that will ensure articles and documents are searched?
Thanks!

Use the K2 Tools module and enable "Google search integration" (K2 Advanced Settings).

I just learned about Smart Search. Do you think that would be a good approach? Thanks!

Hi, I meant to say the PDF files for which I am trying to enable search are on my site as attachments to K2 items. Does the enable google search still apply?
thanks!

K2 by default searches the content of the item.
This is why I suggested Google Search. Just make sure that you use the appropriate titles for your attachments.

Hi, so if an item has an attachment, will the search search the attachment as well? I guess that would be a pretty sophisticated search feature, to search an attachment and show where in the attachment the words were found.
On another note, I am trying to get the K2 Tools Search results to show up in breadcrumbs. But I think to do that I have to associate K2 Tools Search to a hidden menu. And when adding a menu item, I don't see a way to specify a menu type of K2 Tools. Thoughts?
Danke!

Google simply searches all your content. It also indexes tags and categories which is really practical.
Now if you want your search result to render in a specific page you need to read this blog post. nuevvo.com/blog/item/92-enhancing-your-k2-site-part-1-better-search-results
