This is the main page of the category "textile machinery". Underneath the banner you can see a navigation with the subcategories, and a little lower you can see all the items that are part of the primary category "textile machinery", shown as "tiles".

What I would like to see on this page is an overview of only the subcategories, but show as "tiles", just like the k2 items are shown. Is this possible? Showing all the subcategories as tiles with images?

You can enable the subcategory image from the parent category's settings.

You can also disable the loading of the items from that page as well.

thanks, problem solved! I was using a joomlart template and it seemed to block the subcategory images.
