I'm desperately looking to remove the category ID from the url in my k2 2.7.0 install (joomla! 3.5) As I look across this board you keep saying what I have quoted.. how exactly do you map the category into a menu item? I looked everywhere on this board and site and found nothing...Hello Joe,
A prefix is needed in order to work properly. You can remove the prefix entirely by mapping the category into a menu item.

Hello @JLouieLewis please send the details of your Advanced SEF Settings (K2 > K2 Parameters > Advanced tab) that I may assist you.
You may have to create multiple screenshot, as there are many SEO parameters - do not fit on one screen :)

wow! for some reason I can't add files here so I'll just give you the links to the screenshots... that's very odd... These are the last settings I left it on.. no matter how many times I fiddled with it, it stayed the same... I kept testing new articles and clearing out the cache and browser cache and nothing...

Try using the following parameters (remember to clear your cache - also, you will need to recreate your URLs if using a SEF extension)
Note: I am using 2.6.8 so the language may be slightly different:
Prefix for category URLs >> content
(typing none does not have the result you desire)
Use the item title alias >> Yes
Item ID and title alias separator >> Use a dash (-)
Use the category title alias >> Yes
Category ID and title alias separator >> Use a dash (-)

Please share the following for one of your primary categories:
- URL path (do not have to include domain portion)
- URL path of item within the category
- Screenshot of the menu item for that category
- Updated screenshot of your K2 Advanced SEF Settings
