I am trying to modify the settings for hundreds of sub-categories that are all under one of four categories and none of them apparently inherit the main category. Is there a way to change the display settings for a ton of things at once?

Unfortunately doing this through the db can lead to unexpected results.
The most efficient way would be to have these categories inherit their settings from another category (as you already probably know).
