I agree, getting to 1.7 only moves the data intact. Then you get to start all over again with the templating issues. That said, we either have to continue to move and update or stomach a very large update with 1.8/2.5 Joomla or whatever the version the version turns out to be

Category: English K2 Community

Moving from Joomla 1.5.23/K2 2.4.1 to Joomla 1.7.1/K2 2.5
(this is a work in progress and will be updated)

Please backup your site (akeebabackup is the way to go)

Download and install K2 2.5 right on top of your existing 2.4.1 K2 installation

Check the backend of K2, you will see it is new and the dashboard no longer loads with the administrator but is found
under the "components" menu.

Download and install jUpgrade (registar at

Enable mootools system upgrade

Run jupgrade

Test the upgrade by typing yoursite/jupgrade to see the front end - notice that any menu links to k2 return 404 error

Log into the backend of the upgraded site - yoursite/jupgrade/administrator

Notice that there is no K2 component

Install the latest K2 2.5 in this new site

Go to K2 from Joomla Components menu - check Items - they should all be there

Go to your K2 Categories - Set them to Public in the access level

Go to your K2 Items - Set them to Public in the access level

Test your K2 Menu link - it should work

Delete all the files in your site root except the jupgrade directory

Move all the files in the jupgrade directory to your site root directory

Now address your site as yoursite and yoursite/administrator

Ok 1.7.1 and 2.5 is working and the task of upgrading all other components, plugins, and templating begins!

Backend - Edit or New Article - Content Image Field Area Not Visible

Category: English K2 Community

When I create a new article or edit an existing article, the content input area is missing.  So is the image area. You can select the tabs, but nothing appears below. I cannot add content or images. I cannot see the current content or images. Content is showing up on the front end. I have tried installing the System - SC jQuery and enabled Mootools upgrade and that didn't help.

I notice that you have now closed issue 179. However, in my case this issue exists with the default template both in he frontend and in the frontend edit where it can niether be downloaded or deleted. All functions ok in the backend. Any ideas?

Where and when I can download K2 for Joomla 1.7?

Like Chris, I'm stuck with projects under development that will have to be finished under J1.7, and now we're moving all of our new clients to Zoo. They're cleanly coded and (relatively) easy to modify to suit specific client needs, but I also have to say Zoo support and documentation lacks a bit... it's much easier to find answers in the K2 forums.

In order to develop sites more complex than Joomla offers out of the box, I'm more than willing to pay a small licensing fee even if it's a largely community driven project – if for no other reason than to incentivize timely updates and maintenance schedules. I like the whole idea of open source development, but this is exactly the problem with the model... we, as developers, make decisions about which tools to standardize on, and we look bad when the tools don't keep up with the platform.

I'm not intending this as a rant, I just hate going to the client on an upgrade path and having to explain that half of the work we did will have to be un/redone because certain tools aren't keeping up. And like Chris, I'd probably have a slightly different reaction if the K2 leaders were regularly updating us with the status of the project...

Image preview article don't work popup with SIG Pro

Category: Simple Image Gallery PRO

SIG PRO gallery works perfect and so K2.
The problem with the article image is a javascript error that caused from another script in your site.

Try to disable Mootools upgrade plugin that may cause the conflict.

all about K2 and Cache System

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that. I turned off category images, and made sure everything related to displaying categories was set to no/hide. Then on my menu items, I set include child categories to no, and set it to display 10 leading and 0 others. On some pages this change takes effect and the links do not appear at the top of the page. On most, however, it just reverts right back to the default format as soon as I click save (being something like 2 leading and 4 of the others, with show child categories marked back to yes). I've never figured out why I got it removed from some pages but not others, but I can assure you, the settings are the same for all of them (at least until I click save and it reverts back to the default).

Another problem I have with a different K2 template I've started working with recently is that it doesn't let me show more than 20 K2 users. If I set it to display a higher number of users, I am returned a blank page. If I try to use any other filter, I am returned a blank page. If I leave it at 20 and try to click the next button, I am returned a blank page. And once I get the blank page, the only way I can see the first 20 again is if I log out and log back in, but I can still only see the first 20. So now I have a site with 27 authors and can only set up bios/avatars for 20 of them.

Seems like the more I use it, the more bugs I encounter. I'm gonna try to do a fresh K2 upgrade and see if that fixes the users issue on that template, but still, if I can't get those category links off the top of the pages then it's for nothing anyway, because it just looks too unattractive to keep.

Thanks for your help/input though. I do appreciate that. It's more than I received on the thread I started about it.

edit...I should clarify that when I say I am returned a blank page, what I mean is that the page loads normally, but that the list of users is empty. It's not actually an all-white screen, it is just that there are no users visible.

Where and when I can download K2 for Joomla 1.7?

Category: English K2 Community

I wanted to share my experiences with everyone. I have been following this thread for a while now and like everyone else here really do love K2 and hope for a release soon. That being said, I had a 1.5 site that used K2 and the client really wanted to upgrade to 1.7. I decided to give it a go with the K2 2.5 SVN. All said and done it now functions and works well minus one issue I didn't look into fixing. That is item ordering does not work int he admin. Other than that I was able to get everything else working OK, BUT it was a huge headache and took some skills. If you don't have some My SQL and Php My admin skills, you might as well forget it. My approach was to export the tables from the 1.5 version and import them into the 1.7 version. First problem upon inspection is that the permissions were not copied. This made it so you could not browse to any K2 item in the front end without a 404. I had to bulk update the permissions column in the database for all items and categories. Now I could see the items in the frontend. Next, i wasn't able to save anything in K2. No category or item changes. The error I received was about a missing language column. Again I bulk updated the items and categories tables. I added a language column. This solved it. Next, all images were lost. Had to redo them. Not practical for a big site. In my case it was only about 30-40. Attachments did not work either. They were in the proper folder media/k2/attachments. The association to the files was not working. 404 page. I eventually found a post in this forum to direct link to attachments. That worked and I was back in business. Finally the settings for categories (ie comments off, hits on) appeared to be copied over when viewing in the front end, but if you decided to edit and item or category, they were all lost and reverted back to default. So I had to redo the setting for the categories. Not too bad since most inherited theirs from one or two categories. All in all it was a learning experience. As of now, I have a fully functional 1.7 site running K2 2.5 SVN, but it WAS a hassle and not practical for most. I am hoping that K2 releases a migration tool when the stable version is out to avoid all the pitfalls i have had. My two cents. If you really want to migrate your site now, it will be a pain and you will not be happy while you are doing it. Once it is done, it works but still a huge hassle. I would also suggest cloning your site and doing on a dev server so you can work through it over time. All and all the SVN seems pretty stable once it was all running. I think installed it on a new 1.7 site would be OK. Hopefully they will iron out the remaining bugs and get a item migrator in place and we might be in business.........................hopefully before Joomla 3.5 is released. :)
