I don't know why the joomla developer does not have confidential answer.

So you suggest to me reinstall K2 component again. Do you know since before i upgrade it into new version now you are saying install it again. My be i will be lose all the K2 data.

How to fix a dying K2 upgrade?

Category: English K2 Community

We started using K2 in January of this year and have been doing very well, when the new version came out, I mirrored the site and installed it as a test, did my modifications and found it to work fine, so I went ahead and did the installation on the live server.
That killed everything, the site spat errors all over the place and in the admin section we couldn't edit any articles or do anything related to K2. Apparently the upgrade didn't go well for some odd reason. I started troubleshooting and replacing files and code all over the place and now we have a semi-working website where 90% of the front-end is functional and 75% of the back-end is functional.

We have around 9,000 articles, some with video, most with images, which I can't lose and now need to somehow fix this. The "test" website can't be brought live because there's five days worth of content on it (this is the time it took us to fix the messed up upgrade) thats missing.

My plan now is to restart from zero and do a clean Joomla + K2 reinstall on a third server and then import all the articles from the messed up install into it. Yet I can't find any simple way to do this.

Can I just grab all the jos_k2 database items and merge them into the new site and it'll work or is there some massaging to be done to the db files?

Well, one honest reason is we're working a lot with K2 to improve it and yes, we have left FPSS + K2 integration behind. However v3 of FPSS is ready and once it passes our quality control checklist we will roll it out as a free upgrade to existing customers.

If your using ftp, and getting permission denied, try changing the permissions of the folder the file is residing in temporarly at least while you make edits. Most hosting control panels have a file manager that will allow you to even change the permissions of the single file you are editing so as to get access.

If you want this change to be system wide go ahead and edit the K2.css file, remember it will probably be overwritten when you upgrade or reinstall.

A better way would be to use k2 sub template along with css4k2 and make the override there by adding the
.itemBackToTop{ display:none }
there and then you can do two things, use it selectively and it wont get overwritten later.

First i would get it installed and running with sig pro and all video plugins. Use the Commercial sig pro to avoid many problems with setup.

Read these - Templating posts
community.getk2.org/notes/Templating_in_K2
simon.getk2.org/k2-documents/item/91-templating
and try to see if you can get a simple template working on your site...

All videos www.joomlaworks.gr/content/view/16/42/
Sig Pro www.joomlaworks.gr/content/view/17/42/

Then, when you get the override working and the item view set up like you want...Edit the item.php in the override directory of your template and you can eaisly add the code there. It wont be wiped out if you need to reinstall or upgrade at some point.

Kaleb, it worked! It worked immediately (except that it took me a couple months to get around to it :) )

Thank you.

Kaleb Camacho said:yeah. I added them to the end of file where there were no comment marks (#), but you technically you can add them anywhere in the file so long as it's not commented out. It make 20 - 30 mins to see the change. I saw mine pretty much immediately but I remember changing the htaccess file once and having to wait a little while before seeing the change.
Chad Foreman said:Thanks Kaleb for the response. I changed the htaccess.txt file to .htaccess in order to get my search engine friendly URLs in place. Thanks for the tip on the two lines to add. I never would have figured that out. I take it you just added them at the end of the file or did they need to go someplace specific?

Upgrade to V2.2 is as per any other Joomla install.
K2 includes upgrade function.

I would of course recommend that you back up server files first, it will change files in administrator, components, modules etc, so any core mods that might have been made will be lost.

I might have even written a guide on simon.getk2.org, was a long time ago.

Hi, Your guide is good, but one thing I would suggest is that you dont modify the core (default) K2 template files becuase if you upgrade in the future, you will loose these changes.

Instead, it would be better to create a new K2 template, based within your joomla template.

I have a guide on how to create a K2 template, just transfering the data from K2Joom.com to simon.getk2.org and will advise of a new link shortly.

the weird thing is - and I'm sure this is a symptom of the problem... the K2 tools module and stuff has different styling then the module on the Live site on my old hosting account. I'm doing a fresh transfer of all the Component/module files to make sure the data matches the database... but I'm not confident that will really solve the problem.

Martha Moody said:Yes - I used PHPmyadmin...
I fixed my configuration file to point to the new database - and it must be working since the whole site is good (events and classifieds and joomla articles) but just not K2...

I took a sql file of the original database and imported it into a new database using phpmyadmin on the new host. That's how I should do it, right?

I didn't use a backup utility - because I just copied all the files from the old site to my local drive and moved them over to the new site. Then I updated the configuration file for the new host and database. I've moved a few sites and this has worked in the past - I think it's basically the way I would do it even if I used a backup utility, right?

Did I skip something? I did upgrade K2 to 2.2 shortly before I took all the files and database to the new host.

Does someone want to take a look at it? Even for some nominal fee? It's a small community organization, so there's not much of a budget, but we REALLY need this site working to maintain the newspaper!

Did you create the same database user as when you first set up the site - (probably so becasue you say joomla articles load

Ability to display single line catalogitems in content section

Category: English K2 Community

Thanks for this - you are correct, I can change that line - I guess what I am also saying though is that I should hve to go changing source code to make a change like this. ALl it takes is a forgetful moment and next upgrade (if I continue with it) and I can lose this type of change.

I am just surprised though that no one has come up with a reasonably simple way of displaying informaiton on a line by line basis. I was hoping it had already been done, but guess I will have to dig in and do it myself - just takes a lot of time learning - especially with the extremely limited documentation available for K2 (very disappointing given how long it has now been around).

I'm not concerned with losing data, but rather some recent upgrades have retooled the templating (for the better) resulting in formatting issues after the upgrade. For some reason, I got the impression from the Twitter updates that there were more major changes coming this time around.

You are absolutely correct! I checked it and it is only working correct in v. 2.3!

Sorry, was thinking about the general com_k2 template override while talking about the module templateoverride.

I stand corrected :-)

The functionality in v. 2.3 is how it SHOULD work and in general is how all extensions in Joomla should work. I am not sure how it will be handled from Joomla v. 1.6 as that one will have automatic upgrades (yay!). It will put more stress on developers and sitebuilders to use overrides and extensions instead of editing core files.

And last, but not least - backup, backup, backup .... eh... backup!

Thank you for correcting this.

James Ward said:A quick look at the xml file for the module shows this line:
param name="getTemplate" type="folderlist" default="Default" label="Select sub-template" directory="/modules/mod_k2_content/tmpl" hide_default="1" hide_none="1" description=""

With the directory set as /modules/mod_k2content/tmpl

And in the php it looks like it just takes that variable directly. I don't see any if statements looking for templates in other directories.

Maybe 2.3 changes this.

Should I wait for Version 2.3?

Category: English K2 Community

I've got a couple of projects in the works that I've stalled a bit anticipating the release of k2 v2.3. A month ago @joomlaworks on Twitter seemed to suggest it would be released in a couple of days, but there's been almost no chatter about it since then.I'm fine using v2.2 instead, but for some reason I got the impression that the new version would be substantially different to the point that I'd rather not have to reconfigure the component again upon upgrade so soon after initial implementation. So how big is the difference between 2.2 and 2.3? What should we site creators be anticipating when we upgrade to the new version? Will it be a smooth, transparent upgrade or something we'll have to tinker with quite a bit before moving to the live site? Thanks,Greg

Template overrides and css4k2 stops working with upgrade of template

Category: English K2 Community

The template i was using created a directory called .../ext/k2 with a style.css file in it. Not a copy of k2.css but "thier" definition of what certian things should be. Some items that are specified in a template override would be canceled out at the last minute, and some would work. I havent found the call to the file yet, but renaming it to .sav turned everything back to working status at this point.

Template overrides and css4k2 stops working with upgrade of template

Category: English K2 Community

I found base64 code in one of my templates that was working with both k2 overrides and css4k2After backing up the entire template and also the html subdir i did uninstall and reinstall from original source files to eliminate the {bad code} in the template.I then replaced the custom html overrides and _style.css files in the proper places (its showing in firebug but not working)Firebug now shows the style.css of the template above and overriding the mytemplate_style.css which still has the correct values in it, but is being overridden. See attached imageAny ideas?

If you had used K2 longer maybe you would have realized K2 has templates, you can either modify those templates or create own, which I have done. Nothing prevent you from adding images to a K2 article, you can use the built in K2 features or just plop in an image yourself to the content of the article. No different than a Joomla article. This is not a 'hack' nor am I changing K2 beyond its upgrade-ability.

Integrating VM and K2: I do not think this will take more than a few hours to figure out; hardly weeks, months or years. After which the solution can be shared with others in this forum.

I have no reason to argue for you to use K2 or not use K2, that is your decision. But using K2 is why I am here, and adapting VM to work with K2 is the goal of this thread. Your input regarding how I run my business is completely off base and outside this discussion.
