Spaces and Dashes: k2 Tags and SH404SEF

Category: English K2 Community

Hi all,

David - that fix didn't work for me. The tag code was already in the document and it still didn't work...

My solution? Switch to Artio JoomSEF, and install both the component and the K2 plugin.

It now works perfectly and my URLs are as I wish!

Front end editor modal window

Category: English K2 Community

I'm working on a Joomla 1.5.15/k2 v2.2/Apache 2.0.54/PHP 5.2.6/MySQL 4.1.22 site. I have created a k2 login module. When I login to the site I expected the k2 Edit item and Add a new item to this category links to open in a modal window. They don't, the ONLY link that does open in a modal window is the Add new item link listed below the k2 Login module. Looking at the page source ALL 'a' tags have been assigned the class="modal" value. The problem is hard to understand because it works for one link but not for any others, any help/ideas from anyone? Also, when the modal window does open there is no overlay, where is/are the settings for the modal window overlay? Thanks for any help you can give...

fix to use brackets () in image filename

Category: Simple Image Gallery PRO

Hi, recently I realized that there's a problem with uploading images with filenames containing brackets () as an archive in K2 using SIG pro.

The problem is that the image filename is actually closing the tag style="background-image( filename().jpg )". I don't know if it has been fixed in SIG pro 2.0.5 but for the 1.2.x version fix is simple: in the file /plugins/content/jwsigpro.php at line 172 edit the line to add '':
background-image:url({THUMB IMAGE FILEPATH});

to be
background-image:url(\'{THUMB IMAGE FILEPATH}\');

seems to work in most browsers.
thanks for great plugin!

You are right. K2 can be visually customized to your liking, but not capable of the functions you mentioned. I think if you want to use k2 as a catalog template for a presentation purpose (like my case) then it is good, but if you want make it go any further, it has not gone to that stage yet. Better check out other CCK like jSeblod / sobi2.

I get that there are fields which could be applicable to a product type. What I don't get is what the fields do for me that text doesn't do. For instance I could structure my text so that I have a bulleted list which specifies Price, ISBN, Pages, Author, etc.

In K2 you can create fields - but to what end? Are fields more easily searchable? Are they better for SEO? Do they offer formatting advantages? Are they just formatting shortcuts which predefine certain text to be included with a specific category? I must be missing a fundamental element somehow, but I have searched the web, and not found anything that explains what a field is used for, just how to create fields and field groups, then attach to a category.

I do see the advantage to having unique templates available - a nice touch. I don't mind altering existing template, or creating new, but I am afraid that I would be creating templates which are based on my ignorance of K2s inherent formatting capabilities. For a product page, I might want to have a slideshow with selectable thumbnails, a description, user reviews of the item, a bullet list of key features, and available options.

I could layout a template and make the page exactly as I want, and then save it in a folder in /templates/mytemplate/html/com_k2/. That would certainly work, and I like that the sub templates are then available for my use.

But, at this point, I suspect that I would be laying out templates which simply do what K2 was capable of doing without a template. I do not find any guides to formatting items, but the discussions/reviews that I have read leads to believe that K2 does indeed greatly expand the formatting capabilities as compared to articles. If templating, is the answer, it is still much better than regular Joomla, I just have this nagging feeling that there is a whole range of available formatting options that I have not discovered on my own....

I meant to say "I picked it up within 20 minutes without really looking at a lot of documentation." Without looking at a lot of documentation.

And for the last 3 hours I have played around with SOBI2.....its quite difficult, especially trying to figure out how to implement MET basic. Ok, given, I think SOBI aint to difficult, however, I think I need MET cause SOBI does not allow for Field Groups, as K2 allows for, plus, when I have forms from the frontend, all the fields will be shown, which again, K2 caters for with the field groups. Unfortunaly K2 to my knowledge does not allow field searching like SOBI. It seems people have been asking for it for years though. SOBIPro will have it, but I can't sit around and wait for that version.

Let me play around with jSeBlod.

K2, if you can implement these functions from my side:

- The ability to do more with fields than just display exstra info and capturing it easily (searchable)
- Easy frontend form creation
- Ability to make a listing menu from a field, or field set (but I think scyllar already mentioned that)

Like I said, to pick up K2 is super easy. And that is a big advantage. When stuck with a problem and a user can figure out quickly how to use it (the module/extension), odds are they will stick to it.

Thanks for the reply! I don't get using fields as product specifications. What is the benefit of that over just text? I dont mind doing templating, I have read two different articles describing where to put the templates so that K2 finds them as options.

I have been under the impression that K2 gives more layout options than does regular Joomla. Apart from creating new templates for my layouts, I am completely missing this. I had thought (perhaps incorrectly) that K2 provides layout features including easy inclusion of modules into the articles (items).

I get your response. The problem may be that I was under the impression that K2 was more flexible than it is.

scyllar said:hi mike, i am currently working on a catalog using k2, and am willing to give some help :)
why k2 natively better for a catalog?
K2 allows unlimited subcategories...
k2 allows tags... (which in a catalog means cross category filtering capability)
k2 allows unlimited extra fields as your product specifications...
k2 allows frontend adding / editing / pulishing items...
k2 allows template overriding...
k2 allows user groups with different permissions...
k2 also allows social sharing, comment...

how to start:
well this question is complicated, but basically you start with a new category + extra fields group associated, then put some products (items) in this category, but i belive the most important part is templating. Eventually you want to achieve a nice and neat visual effect, so you must do template overriding, CSS work, especially when you want to disable / remove some functions.

I have been working on my catalog for over 2 weeks with k2, and not yet finished. But if you think I could help you anyway, feel free to post here :)

That is what I am thinking about K2. I find that it gives me only a few things in one package: Multiple categories; Extra fields which I use to display (nothing more) extra info easily; I LOVE that I can assign a category to inherent parameters from.

Yeah, that is about it. It promises a lot more though but I can't find it.

As for SOBI.....I haven't played around with it enough...maybe I should look at it again...it was just so ugly visually.

Maybe then, as you say scyllar, how bout a discussion of K2, SOBI and jSeBlod? From my readings the last couple of weeks it seems those are the main contenders (apart from Mosets which is more focused on directory listing).

I tried Alphacontent and couldn't figure out what they are offereing. FlexiContent pretty much the same. Maybe I missed what they are offering, but K2 is the best so far. SOBI I tried but it wasn't intuative and visually rather ugly. And jSeBlod is very intrecate, but hell it takes some time to figure that one out, yet jSeBlod seems like the winner function wise, as it allows ekstra fields plus the ability to use them.

What I am looking for is remenents from my days with MSAccess (10 years ago). I love how access (probably other DB managers as well) functions. How do I get that withing Joomla/K2/jSeblod/SOBI?

I feel K2 has one VERY VERY strong advantage: I picked it up within 20 minutes with really looking at a lot of documentation.

What I noticed with the tag thing in K2 which I found irritating, when I added a tag in an article, I see no reference that I added that tag to the article (am I missing something)?

But rather listen to scyllar, he is quite more articulate in his findings with K2 and SOBI....I have 4 weeks of Joomla web design under my belt.

I would love to see K2 implement a Access way of function and article management. When it comes to varied and 1000's of articles, with the current way it works (Joomla for that matter as well), your category tree becomes humongous and laborious to maintain. I am finding it as I am designing this website now, and its only a fraction of the category tree. If you use the Access approach, one can create numerous drill down paths and numerous ways of including data which makes it easier for the user to find info, as oppose to the use of an advanced filter. I believe, from a user point of view, they need to be able to find a range of info withing a specific topic without the use of a search box. A search box, particularly an advanced search box I believe is used when you have a very specific item you are looking for on a site you have been before. But this might be off topic and I created this discussion. Sorry.

Happy trails

How does K2 compare with Mosets? (and SOBI) (and jSeBlod)

Category: English K2 Community

i love this question but i think maybe sobi2 should also be included in the discussion

IMHO k2 is weak in two ways:

1. tag management
2. search or filtering

in my testing site, when i try to search a value of a custom field, i get a blank page (i did not have sef on yet while doing this).

not so familar with mtree so far, but sobi2 has powerful search.
i think k2 need to get more powerful tag management to become the most powerful CCK.

1. multiple tags menu (link) or tag group
2. tag ordering by id, alpha, number of items associated, etc
3. highly customizable tag cloud templating which allows tag lists or tag group lists displayed as "categories"
4. full content filtering including custom fields and user profile (if made public by the user himself)

a little bit more thoughts -

1. contact owner on item view ( which is key for mtree / sobi2)
2. extra fields on the fly (even for frontend adding)
3. google map

Keep this topic alive...

K2 as a catalog - How?

Category: English K2 Community

I am pretty familiar with Joomla, and created quite a few sites. I am now creating a product catalog. From what I understand about K2, it is a good vehicle for this project. I have loaded the K2 component in a test site and I cannot seem to get started. I can see how to use the ACL and create catagories - but how does this get applied to a catalog?can someone outline the steps needed to create a catalog, or even explain why K2 is better for catalogs than regular Joomla? I must be missing something...Thanks in advance!

template changed: anchor link sometimes loads incorrectly

Category: English K2 Community

Hi k2 users and expertsfirst of all this is my first time to use k2 component, and i found it really great! for listings and other relative type of websites you need.well i created a resort listing website here in the philippines, and i just wanted to display pages the way i want so i modify some template files. its all great except for one thing, "anchor link sometimes not doesn't load correctly"in the category_item.php i wrapped around the item link in the <div class="catItemBody"> cause i wanted to be the whole item div block be clickable not just a title or an image.problem: sometimes when it loads the category list page its perfect, but its not consistent there are times that the anchor tag is not wrapped correctly in the <div class="catItemBody"> instead it will placed in a various section inside the <div class="catItemBody"> but not in all item results alternatively correct and incorrect. see attached image to make it more clearpage with a problem:

page that loads without a problem:

here is the link: quezonresorts.com/resorts-in-quezon.htmlplease, if anyone can give me a guidance to fix this is much appreciated!Thank you so much guys!

k2fields - providing you additional extra fields and extended select

Category: English K2 Community

Thank you for your answer and the small hack solution. I prefer not to hack core files, so for now I will work out a way not to output the extra fields when task=tag in a template, or just hide the extra fields name.

Thanks again,

k2fields - providing you additional extra fields and extended select

Category: English K2 Community

Hi Line,

Great to hear that it is been useful.
Thanks for letting me know about this issue and I had never used the tag view. Now that I have looked into it you are indeed correct.

But unfortunately whenever the task is tag K2 doesn't seem to load the k2 plugins (which k2fields is) nor call necessary events (which this plugin requires in order to function properly and w/o having K2 core hacks in play). So atm there is not much we can do.

If you wouldn't mind putting a K2 core hack in place I would be able to provide you such modification or if you would like to do it yourself open components/com_k2/models/item.php and look at row # 332 and change one of the clauses currently looking as follows:

($view=='itemlist' && ($task=='' || $task=='category') && $item->params->get('catItemK2Plugins')) ||

to

($view=='itemlist' && ($task=='' || $task=='category' || $task=='tag') && $item->params->get('catItemK2Plugins')) ||

Let me know how this works out for you...

Line Wied said:Thank you very much for this plugin.
Im using it for a date extra field. Works fine in item view and in category lists, but when items are displayed by tag, it shows the "k2f---valid=datetime---Dato" instead of the name.

I am looking to filter content articles into a module by K2 Tag and was wondering if anything exists with this functionality. It seems there is a module that does this but am wondering whether I have overlooked it.The other alternative method I may have to use is porting the tag content entries into a Joomla RSS module or plugin. Thanks.
