K2 Documentation

Hi Andria,

the videos I was talking about are available from K2 main page (and from JW website, I think).
Other notes:
- text size buttons: for me it sizes up text once only, it works as a switch, on-->big, off-->small (I haven't dig into .css tough) and it doesn't work for the intro text
- I've never programmed in PHP but it was relatively easy check their 'jungle' template and rearrange a few blocks of code to rework a little my pages (moving the 'read more...' link right after the intro text...)
- I've seen people complaining about tag cloud... making it work it just consisted of a) creating a copy of the K2Tool component and assigning it to a layout area/block (say, user4) c) set component parameters, i.e. tag number limit... that's it! I believe this is standard Joomla stuff even if I'm not a Joomla specialist (at all)

Being psychic? Maybe a little...
Or maybe one need to plan a working organization for categories, tags, extra fields and stuff *in advance*. I see K2 as an extremely powerful tool because it is very simple, it has basic functionalities. You need to combine those to get complex results, but hey, this is the fun part.

Andria Duncan said:rashmani said:Ok, not megabytes of docs. Still a basic and clear templating tutorial (which turns very helpful if you dig into code and play around with K2);

I could really use that link to the templating tutorial, since I completely replaced my old template with their "Jungle" template (though with modified colors) JUST SO that there would be stuff in place in the template to support K2 -- but for some reason, that font-size option thing doesn't work at all -- why? I could understand it not working, if I was using some non-Joomlaworks/Templateworks template, but I'm using one of theirs, and it still doesn't work.

*sigh*

Please, will you share those links to those things you mentioned? it's really not fair to tell me these things exist and not tell me WHERE they exist!!

Displaying HTML codes in K2

Category: English K2 Community

Hi

I want to have a "HTML" learning category in my site and display HTML contents.
I added a text area "extra field" to show HTML content with GeSHi(Code Hightlighter) and add it to "learning" category and I made a template for it.

But when I put some HTML code in that extra field all of tags removed!!

Can you guide me how to display HTML code in my K2 category?

Thanks

optional registration page

Category: English K2 Community

Hello Jimmy, I have found a solution to my problem which I believe also resolves yours. With Joomla 1.5 the creators have allowed developers to override core output, be it templates or actual pages and functionality. In fact K2 takes advantage of this fact to extend the core user functionality; user description, avatar etc are added. However the problem is this breaks other extended functionality from other modules or components. A quick print our the template array shows the order with which joomla selects the file to display:

[template] => Array
(
[0] => /var/www/html/test/templates/your_template/html/com_k2/templates/
[1] => /var/www/html/test/components/com_k2/templates/
[2] => /var/www/html/test/templates/your_template/html/com_user/register/
[3] => /var/www/html/test/components/com_user/views/register/tmpl/

So you can see that joomla first looks for a file in your current template folder for the k2 component, if nothing is there it looks for a file in components/com_k2/templates/ folder and so on.

There are two possible solutions to you problem:
1) stop the k2 component overriding the joomla and/or other components/modules output by completely commenting out the function onAfterDispatch() in the k2 system grammar plugin. However doing so will stop the k2 extended user functionality working. When users register they won't be able to add their description or avatar.
2) In the folder /var/www/html/test/templates/your_template/html/com_k2/templates/ (create it if not present) create a file register.php. In this file you must combine the extended functionality of k2 component with you ajax registration module.

tutorial: Cleaning up the K2Login Module Formatting

Category: English K2 Community

It drives me crazy when things do not line up visually, and the K@ login with avatar enabled seemed to have some formatting issues in many of the templates I use. The MAIN problems was that the bulleted list of actions [ie: Add New Item, My Page & My Account] overlapped with the avatar and looked messy.

To fix this, I edited the file: /modules/mod_k2_login/tmpl/userblock.php

1) At around line 25 you should see a paragraph tag
2) Add a new line after that with a div tag, padded 70px [see attached file for example]
3) Around line 41 you should see an end ul tag
4) add a new line after that with and end div tag
5) save the file and check it in your browser

You can adjust the padding amount for whatever looks good to you. Also, if you fail to add the end DIV [step 4 above] it will wreak havoc on your template! Use at your own risk, and enjoy!

Hi
Thank you for your reply but still my basic question is not answered. As I understand from your reply that I can't place inline images with word limit functionality.

Lefteris Kavadas said:Hi. That's why K2 provides a separate field for image and gallery. If K2 apply word limit without striping the HTML tags it could result to a completely broken page. This may produce inappropriate closed tags.

Lefteris Kavadas said:Hi. When you apply a word limit the HTML tags are removed to avoid tags that will remain unclosed as when we are counting the words we can't know if we are counting content or HTML code.

How I made the thumbnails work and other problem solvers with SIG Pro

Category: English K2 Community

After days of grief and fears that K2 wouldn't for my project... I finally got all the stars aligned and the thumbs are displaying. I figured I'd share my fixes here in one place - because I suspect they are common problems!

1) THUMBS DON'T DISPLAY

I found that my file names were image.JPEG - instead of image.jpg. I don't know why they defaulted to that - I actually got them off the internet from some other website, so I wasn't expecting that weird caps JPEG file extension.

I changed all the extensions to jpg and the problem was solved (sort of, read on)! For those who are only run-of-the-mill geeks (who also use Windows), you can set your Windows explorer to show the extensions so these things are caught more quickly and more easily changed! Go to folder options and find the select box for Hide file extensions. Turn it off!

2. TABS & EDITOR BROKEN ON ITEMS WITH GALLERIES
Then I still had this issue of the Editor and Tabs breaking when a gallery was installed. I could not see tabs and I could not delete galleries. The Editor was totally gone. I know this is a common problem!

This was easily resolved by following the advice from some other discussion to use a mootools SIG pop-up. I had a JQuery pop-up selected.

3. UNKNOWN ARCHIVE ERROR When uploading an archive I got this error. I actually didn't ever find a way to resolve this problem, but you might be relieved to know it only happens in FIREFOX. Try IE, if you haven't already! At least it's not a deal killer.

Now to find out why my Tags are breaking! :)

Oh, c'mon.
Ok, not megabytes of docs. Still a basic and clear templating tutorial (which turns very helpful if you dig into code and play around with K2); still you can get info and help reading forums, help, trying things and build on provided tools (categories, tags, extra fields, K2 tools flavors,...). There's a 45 minutes video you can learn a lot from!
It takes time, agreed.
It takes dedication, ok.

Then go and build it your own, from scratch, in this fast-job world.
Good luck.

I still believe it's worth plan things, use something new and promising, even if it takes time, and take a challenge.
Yes, I still have open questions about K2 but after a week playing with (from scratch), K2 gave me full satisfaction, made me learn a lot about it (and Joomla) and it was almost fun.
So, no matter those open questions, thanks for K2.

Andria Duncan said:Well, I completely agree with you, they made this awesome program, and expect us to just guess how to use it. But, it might be slightly easier than another CCK-type thing I've been looking at, which DOES have docs, which make no sense at all -- they're translated from French and don't hang together grammatically at all, to make any kind of sense. I tried to click the link you posted, but it went 404, so I have no idea what you said in that page.
I read in some other post that K2 ought to be installed in a site that already has some content, so one can import the existing content and see how it does with K2, so I guess I'll try that. I *am* wondering, however, how K2 plays with Remository? The site I'm thinking of installing K2 on, most of the content is in Remository, so if it won't play nice with that, it might be utterly useless at that site.

However, for another site of mine, this may be just what the doctor ordered to get some book reviews with special fields for author's name and reviewer's rating of the book. Simple_Reviews just doesn't work at all, and Booklibrary is kinda useful for its interface with Amazon, but the free version is kinda limited and I just don't have $35. Heck, I don't think I have 35 CENTS, and all these costly extensions for a FREE cms are really starting to irk me.

shiva said:Well, this is the classic example of geekware isn't it. Alas, I am not a geek either, nor am I a mind reader, but... Sorry for being sarcastic, but I am done with that now, and who ever is the man around here will learn his lesson and actually have INSTRUCTIONS!!!!

As the expression goes, if you want something done, don't wait for other people to do it, just do it yourself. I'm very new to Joomla, this site is exactly one day old, but have figured somethings out at least, and have written them down in a news post that is very long and windy. So it's best to just display a link, others can pick this up and continue as well if they wish, I am very far from being any kind of expert...

This is a very fast job BTW, so excuse the messy post and badly formatted page. I will add more to this as I discover new things.

Actually you can assign which menu items each breadcrumb module works on, so you can have it so that the K2 tools breadcrumb only applies to the K2 articles, and then in the core Joomla breadcrumb module enable it for all menu items except for the k2 articles.

Walter Howard said:Exactly! Me too. I've tried to find a fix, but cannot seem to find how the breadcrumbs are determined by Joomla from K2.
Walt.

Daniel Sarno said:I found the solution. When using K2 you can't use the Joomla core breadcrumbs. You have to use the K2 tools module and change the module to breadcrumbs mode. It then works as breadcrumbs should work. Hmm this means the entire web site must be in K2. Daniel Sarno said:I am noticing my bread crumbs are missing too. When I click on a category I have: home>>topcatagory1>>topcatagory1 The category is repeated When I clcik on a sub catagory I get:
Home>>Subcatagory1
The top category is missing

When i click on an article i get:
Home
All else is missing

I am using KS v2.1.

Any Ideas?

Andrew - thanks for your reply! Working with K2 kind of feels like the first time I tried to use Joomla... and was so frustrated because I didn't know where to begin of what related where. Once I got through a site with it - it became intuitive and SO much better than the old way of building a website. :) I think that K2 might be the same experience... so I'm going to keep working on it.

This site is a realtor website for my mom - so low pressure and I think maybe a good way to experiment with K2 - creating properties as articles and using the videos and galleries to their maximum advantage.
